client can not open my files any more

I am working with trados 2007. Since a few days, my clients can not open my bilingual ttx-files any more. I can open and work with them normally, but other can not open them any more. Can someone help me with this problem?

Is it only your files that your customer cannot open? Or is his/her copy of TagEditor simply not working the way it should?

Can you give more information about the error messages your client receives and what is the original file format that you are trying to translate? Also, what version of Trados is your client using?

It seems we found the problem:
When you may open a ttx file with notepad, on the first line, you may see “?” in the file. Normally, the correct file only contains “” but there is no question mark at the very beginning.
So this is the reason why they cannot open my ttx files.
And when you delete this question mark and save, you can open the ttx file again.

I think I have to report that to SDL to see why Trados is doing that and ask for a solution

The client has to do a lot of editing, opening the file in notepad, deleting the leading "?" and then saving it with a different encoding.

Problem is that all the special characters (ã,õ,ç) go missing.

When I open the ttx here, with notepad, I see no such character.

Can it be something to do with tag settings?

I don't see any reason whey they can no longer open the files -- except themselves having changes something system-wise.

Any ideas?

Hi Andrea, have you found a solution for this? I have exactly the same problem with both Trados 2007 and Studio 2009. My client cannot open my ttx files and the message "Error reading TTX file header: Invalid document structure" appears. It seems that they only have problems with my files.

This is a known problem. It appears when a bilingual TTX file was created in SDL Trados 2007 previous version or build and is being opened in any later version of Trados. The only solution to this problem is to upgrade to actual SDL Trados build version and re-create TTX file in this version.

The existing TTX will still produce error 40007 even after upgrade so you would need to open the original source file against the same translation memory and run Translate to Fuzzy command to re-apply translation. Then save it as a NEW bilingual TTX file.

We recommend that you upgrade your current SDL Trados 2007 version to the latest SDL Trados 2007 Suite version (build 863), possibly as a license upgrade to the SDL Trados Studio 2009 Freelance Plus license package, which includes SDL Trados 2007 Suite as well. This might solve the discrepancy between your SDL Trados 2007 version and your client's version. SDL Studio ttx files and Trados 2007 ttx files incompatibel? Nov 3, 2011

Same here, but only with one customer. She sends me ttx files, I edit them, send them back, after which she can't open them in Trados 2007, but I can.

The "solution" you found is no solution at all, of course. "Your client might solve it by updating their Trados 2007, but then again, they might not, so they'd better buy Studio." What a load of... The problem obviously lies with SDL, but they just couldn't be bothered. Scandalous.

It may be that the problem is being caused by not using the compatibility mode in Studio when you open the TTX for translation. This has been discussed here quite a lot and it would certainly be worth checking this first. If you review the Migration Guide, which is installed with 2009 and 2011 you will be able to read up on the best practices for handling legacy formats in Studio. Actually I would recommend all users coming from Trados or SDLX to review this document.

The compatibility mode is found here on the TRADOStag filetype:


If you ensure this is checked prior to opening the TTX for translation, or prior to preparing your Project, then Studio will not use wysiwyg mode and it will keep placeholder tags in the TTX as placeholders instead of turning them into tag pairs. If you have to give the TTX back to your customer then it is advisable to always use this mode.

If this doesn't resolve your problem then please feel free to send me the files and we can look at them in more detail.
