SDL Studio 2009 won't open Word 2007 file

When I tried to open a .docx word document for translation in SDL Studio 2009, I get the error message "Stack empty" after about 15% of the task "Convert to translateable format", and the document won't load. No explanation that I can find anywhere. I have managed to workaround it for now by saving the .docx file as .doc. Any idea what that error means and how to avoid it?

Unfortunately, sometimes the file format itself creates processing problems. Sometimes we have issues with .doc files which are solved by converting them to .docx; sometimes we have issues with .docx files which are solved by converting them to .doc. It's very difficult to say exactly why these issues occur; my gut feeling is that it depends on how the documents were created.

Perhaps if they are created in Word 2007/2010, but saved as .doc, that somehow slightly corrupts them; likewise, it's possible that .doc files that have been opened/edited in Word 2007/2010 and then saved as .docx are in some way compromised. The trouble is, there's almost no way of knowing what the actual "original" file format was...

I think the only way round it is to convert, and then re-convert back to whatever the received format was right at the end of the process. If anyone else has any ideas, I'd also be very keen to hear them!
