Help: how to merge hundreds of TMs quickly in Trados?

Hi,

I'm working in a translation company.

I'm now taking care of one project which has 55 languages.
We have 55 major TMs before.

Yesterday, the client sent us over 500 TMs which used in several different small projects.
Now I want to merge them into the major TMs I used before.

I know the standard way.
But I have to say this way can really break my finger

Anyone has some quick way to do this work?

BTW, the trados version is Trados 7.

I heard that Trados 2009 can do this work easily, is this ture?

Thank you very much!

Xbench Aug 16, 2011

Hi,

try Xbench a small tool from Apsic. You can load all the TM in a project and export them into a TMX file.

Good luck

Thank you! Aug 16, 2011

I tried the method you suggested, and succeed.

The number of languages is too large.

The major TMs I used before is .TMW and the TMs sent by client is .TMX files.
I found that Xbench doesn't support .TMW files.

I create a new project in Xbench, add all the .TMX into this project, then export them into one big .TMX.
And then open the major TMs (.TMW) in Trados workbench, import the big .TMX.

Please correct me if I made some mistake.
Thanks!

Try 2009 and see... Aug 16, 2011

Hi Hector,

I have never tried to do this with Studio for so many, but the advantage is that it will organise the TMs by language if you want as well as merge them together so you can do them all in one go. My guess is that if they are not too large it should be ok... and even with larger ones it might work but could just take a while.

I would recommend just trying it. You can use the Trial version for this as it is a non-restricted version for 30-days. I'd be interested to hear how it went too..!

There are various threads on how to do this but this one might be useful for you:

Can I merge the TMs into .tmw format? Aug 18, 2011

Thanks, Paul.

I tried Trados studio. It's very helpful.
However, the output format of the TMs is .sdltm.
I suppose Trados 7 doesn't support this format.

Is there any way to change the TMs' format to .tmw?
Thanks!

Convert through TMX Aug 18, 2011

Hi Hector,

You would have to export the SDLTM as TMX first and then import that into a Trados 7 TMW.

You can do this in Studio by right clicking and select export in TM Maintenance View. Or there is a little Application in the OpenExchange that is nice and simple to use and will do multiple files at the same time:

Some feedback Aug 22, 2011

Hi Paul,

Here is some feedback:

1, Trados studio cannot distinguish some minor difference of the region settings when merging the TMs:

Such as: ZH_CN, ZH_HK, ZH_TW will be merged into one TM: ZH_HK.
I think this is a bug or maybe I didn't use the correct setting?

2, The merged TM's format is sdltm, and I can export it into tmx format.
But this tmx TM cannot be imported into Trados 7 or Trados 2007.
Is this a known bug?
Maybe I have to find some other way.

Anyway, thanks very much for your help!

Finally, resolved. Aug 22, 2011

Hi Paul,

This problem is finally resolved.

The encoding of tmx file exported from Trados studio is UTF-8 while Trados 7 can only support Unicode tmx files.

Thanks very much for your help.
It's very nice of you!
