Error code 50040 when trying to activate my SDL Trados Studio Starter license

Hi,

I have SDL Trados 2007 installed on my computer which works totally fine with my license key. Since I received a task to be done in SDL Trados Studio 2009 by Monday, I wanted to install the 30 day free trial version of Studio by downloading Studio 2009 and going through the installation procedure. However, when I got to the activation stage, a dialog appeared saying that the trial has expired and I was offered two options: either buy the product or activate it using a license key. Beforehand, I had never installed any versions of Studio, therefore, I could not understand why the trial could have expired.

I logged into my SDL account to see that actually I own a license key for SDL Trados Studio Starter which is valid for 90 days. I entered the activation code in the activation dialog and when I clicked Next for validation, I received the following error: Could not contact activation server (Error code 50040)

When checking my licenses in my SDL account, I was startled to see that my license for the Starter version was already in use, but no matter how hard I tried to start the application from the Start menu, I was always given the activation dialog again with the two options: either buy the software or activate it with an activation code. I also returned the license key I have for SDL Trados 2007, so there should not be a conflict between the two activation codes.

Any help on this issue would be very very much appreciated as I need to submit this task first thing in the morning on Monday, and the document is very important for my client.

Thank you so much in advance.

Melinda

Try the Solution finder Sep 17, 2011

go to http://kb.sdl.com and start the Solution finder there.
It should either find a solution for you or allow you to contact SDL Support.

Error code 50040 is discussed in this KB article:
http://kb.sdl.com/article.aspx?article=3176&p=1

In any case, you don't need to return your 2007 licence. The 2 applications have completely separate licences.

Hi Emma, Hi Jerzy, Sep 17, 2011

Thank you so much for your suggestions. I have tried both locations, but unfortunately, the issue still persists. I think I will just need to wait until SDL Support sends me details on what to do to resolve this problem.

Thank you again for your help.
