G'day everyone I broke my Idiom Desktop Workbench icons in the registry without making a backup first (stupid, stupid, stupid). Can anyone here with Idiom please let me know the values for the following two keys? [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\DWB.WPZ\DefaultIcon] [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\DWB.XLZ\DefaultIcon] Thanks Samuel
What OS are you using? | Nov 8, 2011 |
Under Vista Pro, the only entries I found are .xlz --> DWB.XLZ --> ShellNew. Name Default Type REG_Z Data (undefined value) Same for DWB.WPZ

On my computer, the key you're referring to does exist: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.xlz\DWB.XLZ\ShellNew but the key I'm referring to is further down from that one, namely: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\DWB.XLZ\DefaultIcon Do you have it? Samuel == You can get the keys by running these commands from the CMD window: REG EXPORT "HKCR\DWB.WPZ\DefaultIcon" "C:\proz_forum_query_wpz.reg" REG EXPORT "HKCR\DWB.XLZ\DefaultIcon" "C:\proz_forum_query_wpz.reg" and the .reg files can be opened in Notepad.

I haven't installed Idiom under XP Pro but normally you should be able to create a new shortcut by right-clicking on your desktop (New --> Shortcut). If no icons are displayed after creating your shortcut, you should right-click again and under Properties, you should be able to change/select an icon

I want the original Idiom Desktop Workbench icons for XLZ and WPZ files back. I changed it to something else, but I want to change it back (without uinstalling and reinstalling the software). What I'm talking about is the icon that is displayed when you see an XLZ or WPZ file on your computer -- it has nothing to do with shortcuts.
File Association Issue | Nov 8, 2011 |
I think what you should do is right-click on an Idiom file and select Open with and then click on Idiom if available, this should restore your registry setting. Alternatively, open Control Panel --> Folder Options --> File Types, several options are provided to restore the proper file type

The problem is not the file association but the icon association. When I create a new file type and associate it with Idiom, the icon that is used by Idiom itself is used, not the icon that Idiom normally uses for WPZ and XLZ files. When I try to re-associate a WPZ or XLZ file with Idiom, the icon does not change from what it currently is.
Have you tried Control Panel --> File Types --> Open With --> Advanced --> Change Icon?

Bernard Lieber wrote: Have you tried Control Panel --> File Types --> Open With --> Advanced --> Change Icon? Well, of course I could use that, if I knew where the Idiom icons were stored. But I don't. Do you? The icons are not separate ICO files in the Idiom program directory, and they are not stored inside Idiom's EXE file either.
Here are my registry settings | Nov 8, 2011 |
Hi Samuel, Here are the entries from my registry settings: DWB.WPZ DefaultIcon type REG_SZ C:\WINDOWS\Installer\{7AD087F4-C7B6-4349-A9BF-0484BE301033}\_B33E0342_7629_4299_AD23_512F4742BAA3,0 DWB.XLZ DefaultIcon type REG_SZ C:\WINDOWS\Installer\{7AD087F4-C7B6-4349-A9BF-0484BE301033}\_9C527003_376E_44A1_92D9_74639E17E716,0 No guarantee, but I haven't modified them, at least deliberately! I've installed Idiom on one of my XP machine with SP3 and it's ok so I think it may have to do with SP2 under XP - anyway, MS is not supporting XP if SP3 is not installed.
