I have recently bought SDL Trados 2011, I'm learning how to use it and I need your help with this. I have several regular clients and this would save a lot of my time in the future - that is, creating TMs from already translated files.

Thank you in advance.

Align Translated Documents Mar 1, 2012

You can align them using Studio then create a TM from the aligned file.

You can find the Align Translated Documents at the top, under the Home tab.

Alignment Mar 1, 2012

Yes, the procedure is called alignment. WinAlign can do it.
However, my experience with WinAlign is pretty bad: the graphic interface makes things way too slow to my taste. Wordfast Classic has a free add-on called PlusTools that I strongly prefer. The result of the automatic alignment is usually fairly good and customizable - and the manual correction of the mismatches is very quick thanks to the (minimalist and) perfectly adapted interface. András Farkas has also posted a very powerful aligner, LF Aligner which is probably the best choice: its algorithm seems very good, so the first (automatic) result is in general excellent.

I would strongly suggest that you take a good look at PlusTools and LF Aligner - both are likely to save a lot of time in the long run compared to WinAlign.

Best,
Attila

Yes it´s possible Mar 1, 2012

Yes that is possible in Trados,

i only have the German version, let me try and explain step by step in english (the button names might be something similar, im just translating from german):

start up Trados Studio:

Go to the "home" page

In the top forth button from the left with blue symbol "allign documents"

a Window opens up

=> New Project

First page "general" select source and target language, and filetype
Second page "files" add source and target file, then allign
Last page "export", select export format
Then click ok, you should now be able to see the automatic segmentation, check it and change it by dragging the lines around, until all segments are alligned correctly.

Export, you have now a TM.

Thank you all Mar 1, 2012

Hi Sigrid,

Thank you for the step-by-step explanations, they were very useful; however, the last thing I have to do is to export it as a TM, but I don't have this option... is the export file a .txt file? How do I convert it into a TM?

later edit:

I've tried with the .txt file and it worked, so everything is fine.

Thank you again!!

You just need to create a new TM and import the exported file from Alignment into the new TM.

Export to TXT Mar 31, 2012

Hi Lucy, I have also encountered the same error a while ago. I don't know the reason, but in my case the error happened only at attempt to export into TMX. Exporting into TXT worked fine.
