This is probably very, very simple...! I want to create a TM based on already translated material.

A client has sent me an existing translation as a .txt file and asked me to import it into a new TM.

Well, I have created a new TM and have tried to import it in the Translation Memories view, but nothing appears. It says that there are no translation units to display. What might I be doing wrong?

TIA!

ETA:
Sorry, I use Studio 2009. Doesn't anybody mind read around hereicon_wink.gif

When I try to import the txt file, I get the message (not error message):

Please wait while the data is being imported into the translation memory.
File name Read: 1924 Imported: 0 Errors: 0
Recomputing fuzzy index statistics... Done

But nothing seems to happen.

I have also tried to upgrade the TXT to an SDLTM, but I get this error message:
The translation memory in [my file] could not be loaded: 'Invalid file format - no valid signature found'

Your version of Trados May 23, 2012

First of all, what version of Trados do you have?

I'm no genius with Trados but... May 23, 2012

My understanding is that you can only import TMX files into a 2009 TM, not TXT files.

So, to get from a TXT file to a 2009 TM, you would need to import the TXT to a 2007 TM, export this as a TMX and then import the TMX into your 2009 TM.

Obviously you'll need Trados 2007 to do this.

Hope that helps.

It couldn't just be simple and straight forward could it? I think I'll work without it, there were no 100% matches anyway.

Thanks!icon_smile.gif

TMX format May 23, 2012

Ask your client to export it to TMX. Can be done in either version of Trados, 2007 or 2009. Then import it into your TM.

Hello Richard,

You can upgrade a TXT TM directly in Studio and you can also merge a TXT TM into an existing SDLTM... so a sort of import.

However... this only applies to a TXT created in Trados in the first place. I have tried upgrading and merging TXT TMs from other tools and sometimes it's ok... sometimes it's not. So if you do have a problem then getting a TMX is probably a more reliable way to go. TMX is the TM Exchange file anyway... so better to get this than a TXT and particularly if the TM comes from something other than Trados.

Regards

Paul

Thank you May 24, 2012

I ended up asking my client for a TMX instead, which worked fine.
