Trados Studio 2011 Automatic Updates Stopped Working

Since yesterday, every time I launch Trados, I get a message that it cannot search for updates because there was an error connecting to the HTTP server.

The only possible trigger I can think of is that I logged on to a VPN yesterday for the first time. Although I it had been setup previously, I had never used it before. After disconnecting from the VPN, Trados stopped auto updating. I tried manual updates from the Help menu and that did not work either.

Another strange thing is that despite having set my GUI language to English, the error messages and manual update prompts are appearing in Japanese.

I don't have internet connection issues, so I don't know what is affecting this function. It's not mission critical, but I want to be able to get the updates when they are available.

"Wonder Tonic" Trados Studio 2011 May 31, 2012

The following procedure has cured several 2011 "ailments" for me. It seems the automatic update function is not working that well anyhow:

Please browse to ftp://leuvenftp.sdlintl.com/Article_4077/
If you are prompted for an username , please type hotfix , no password is
required.

Please download Studio-KB4077-6.zip, unzip and run it .
This is the last update for Studio and it is better to run it manually like this
and not going to Help -> Check for Updates.

After this is done , please refresh your settings for Studio:
1. Please delete these 3 files :
- BaseSettings.xml
- plugincache.xml
- UserSettings.xml

You can find them following this path, depending on your operating system :
- Windows XP: C:\Documents and Settings\[USERNAME]\Application Data\SDL\SDL
Trados Studio\[VERSIONNUMBER]
- Windows Vista/7: C:\Users\[USERNAME]\AppData\Roaming\SDL\SDL Trados
Studio\[VERSIONNUMBER]

2. Secondly, please delete the project.xml following this path.. Also please
remember that is clearing your projects view in Studio . Even this, your
projects will be still stored on your machine , they are cleared only from
Studio :
- Documents ->Studio 2011 -> Projects
- Windows XP : C:\Users\[USERNAME]\Documents\SDL Trados Studio\Projects

Please also keep in mind some folders may be hidden. For this reason you may
need to review your folder settings via: Start - Control Panel - Folder Options
- View - and select "Show hidden files, folders or drives".

The alternative of course... May 31, 2012

... is to use the Knowledgebase. All updates are placed here. The relevant KB is this one:

http://kb.sdl.com/kb/article?ArticleId=4077&source=article&c=12&cid=23

But if you go to http://kb.sdl.com and then click on Browse KB, the second tab on the left and then navigate using the tree on the left to SDL Trados Studio - Hotfix and Service Pack Releases T2011 then you'll also find the updates here.

Paul

Actually, I'm Already Up to Date May 31, 2012

I checked my version info against the KB and it seems I am already up to date (Ver 10.1.2880.3).

The question is why did the automatic updates suddenly stop working? It appears I am not the only one with the issue. While my error message displays in Japanese, I am pretty sure it is the first one listed here

Not sure... May 31, 2012

Hi Joel,

I don't think this is a widespread issue... I've seen a few posts about this and that's all. So nothing that points to a more serious problem. It may be due to our server being down or your internet connection at the time of attempting the update for example. If this is a consistent issue and you are never able to make use of the automatic updates please drop me an email the next time this happens and we can take a look.

Issue Persists But I'm Moving On Jun 1, 2012

Okay, I actually tried BowAndFiddle's suggestion.
I installed the update (although I was already up to date) and deleted said files.

CAUTION
For anyone else out there, please be aware that this will kill any tweaks you've made to the Editor screen and delete all your Keyboard Shortcuts, among other settings.

So, this helped to nix a Spell Check bug that cropped up yesterday
(Error message = "Exception has been thrown by the target of an invocation" )

however, the auto update function still does not work.

I am left to wonder if the VPN I was using the other day screwed up my Java settings. There is nothing else that I've done to my computer (that I know of) that would affect settings somewhere.

Anyway, this is not a mission critical bug, but it's still a bug nonetheless. I guess I'll just have to do manual updates from the SDL FTP server from here on out

Thanks all for your suggestions.
