Trados 2007 and subtitles, how to avoid code lines being translated? Thread poster: Enzo Santilli
|
Hello everyone,
I'm currently working on some subtitles with trados 2007. I opened the original .ass file with Word, created a new memory and started translating but trados considers the whole line (time code included) when translating. I need to translate only words, instead.
Here's an example:
Dialogue: 0,0:00:09.57,0:00:11.28,SS Regular,,0000,0000,0000,,Donned in Cloths of constellations
Dialogue: 0,0:00:11.71,0:00:14.36,SS Regular,,0000,0000,0000,,they fight by exploding energy hidden in their bodies
Dialogue: 0,0:00:14.85,0:00:17.04,SS Regular,,0000,0000,0000,,called Cosmo.
If I Alt+home this I will have the translating window including everything form the beginning of the line until the end, that is:
(bold words mean "these are the ones that Trados will translate")
Dialogue: 0,0:00:09.57,0:00:11.28,SS Regular,,0000,0000,0000,,Donned in Cloths of constellations
Dialogue: 0,0:00:11.71,0:00:14.36,SS Regular,,0000,0000,0000,,they fight by exploding energy hidden in their bodies
Dialogue: 0,0:00:14.85,0:00:17.04,SS Regular,,0000,0000,0000,,called Cosmo.
Instead, I would like trados will automatically exclude every setting/timing sub for every line, thus blocking the first part and allowing the translation of the second one, like this:
Dialogue: 0,0:00:09.57,0:00:11.28,SS Regular,,0000,0000,0000,,Donned in Cloths of constellations
Dialogue: 0,0:00:11.71,0:00:14.36,SS Regular,,0000,0000,0000,,they fight by exploding energy hidden in their bodies
Dialogue: 0,0:00:14.85,0:00:17.04,SS Regular,,0000,0000,0000,,called Cosmo.
Is that possible?
Thank you in advance to everyone.

Hallo Enzo,
why would you want to translate subtitles with Trados? Any way, the best way to go in this case is to export the .ass file first into some text file without the time codes. Opening the .ass with Word was not a good idea I am afraid and this may cause problems when your client tries to restore the titles. | | | Subtitling requires software | Aug 28, 2012 |
Doing subtitling in Trados is - I would say - impossible. You need special software that can link film and subtitles. I have worked as a subtitler from English to Danish for three years and use Softel Swift. | | | Enzo Santilli Local time: 03:34 English to Italian + ... TOPIC STARTER Alternatives? | Aug 28, 2012 |
Thank you everyone for your replies.
Just wondering: is there any free tool or free software that can deal with .ass or .srt files and, why not, which can automatically exclude timing codes when translating?
Thank you again! | |

I agree with you, Annelise, and if I may, it also requires special knowledge. Any good translator is not necessarily a good subtitler.

Enzo there are in fact free tools such as Jubler or Subtitle Workshop you may want to try. These although are not professional tools and also I perfectly agree with Faustine that subtitle translation can be tricky for newbies, you should undergo special training before venturing ...
Just my 2 cents.
Good luck.

... let'snot forget we have a subrip filetype for Studio that is freely available on the OpenExchange... and you could handle the file example you gavewith a regex filetype to only present the translatable text in the editor.
Professional subtitling aside of course.
