Hi,

Not sure how to do this.

I translate mainly Spanish to English and have TMs in both ES>EN (US) and ES>EN (GB).

I would like to combine some of these TMs into one because I am forever coming across terms that I have translated in one of the variants but not the other and think to myself "Why can't I consult the other TM?"

Any ideas on a solution?

Thanks

One idea... Sep 15, 2012

I have the same problem with PtPt and PtBr. (i work with trados 2011)

What i do?

Like this:

Export the TM in TMX format (for example the TM for the En-Us). Than i open it with an txt editor ( i use EmEditor, the free version).
Than use the option "Find/Replace" to replace for example : "En-Us" with "En-GB".

Every TM have the languages codes. So this way you change it to the language you want.

Than import it again to the TM with En-Gb.

Never was an issue until 2011 SP2 Sep 17, 2012

I could import TM from En_US tmx into En_GB TM and vice versa. Now I have to look for ways around. Can someone explain why this has become an issue with SP2, and will it get back to the way it was? Because now I have to open Studio 2009 to import tmx of different language variant.

What about having it for lookup? Sep 18, 2012

I was browsing for just this issue.
When importing my TMs into Studio 2011, I did do a merge of all the BrEn into the UsEn TM. But I still would like to use others as reference and the system won't let me. I translate often Swedish into Spanish and some Swedish clients send me "mixed" files with parts in English and parts in Swedish. So it would be very convenient to have a both source Swedish and source English (both UK and US) as reference when translating. Not an option in Studio 2011 SP2, then?

You could always use... May 25, 2013

. .. AnyTM from the openexchange. This is a plugin that allows you to add any TM you like as a read only so if you set up templates containing the TMs you normally work with you never need to mess around with the codes at all.

Paul

Read only TMs May 25, 2013

Why can't you just simply select any TM that you have loaded up into the Project Settings window and select Enabled and Look up?

I think we are all responsible & sensible enough not to mess up our TMs.

Just used this technique to convert a large DE-US to DE-UK TM and it works like a charm. Excellent tip which I'm sure I will use again many times.

Just a quick update... Feb 26, 2014

... as I originally suggested AnyTM as an option here. The latest version is incredibly flexible and might be interesting too : http://wp.me/s2xDjK-supertm

Use UltraEdit to change TM file target language Jun 15, 2015

Here is an example of how you can change a TM from EN-UK to EN-US in Trados 2011 if you cannot export the file to TMX (if it is a project from an agency, for instance). Make a copy of the EN-UK TM, then open the copy in UltraEdit and search for all instances of "en-GB" and replace them with "en-US". Then save the file (UltraEdit saves automatically to the correct format). Now you have an EN-US TM file with the exact same content as the EN-UK file.
