Emergency: cannot open sdlxliff file, 'Unexpected end of file has occurred'

I've been hit with this error out of the blue:
Unexpected end of file has occurred. The following elements are not closed: internal-file, reference, header, file, xliff. Line 2722, position 1.
....and of course I have a deadline to meet and a file that won't open! The problem is that there are large chunks of text that I stupidly never added to the TM, so it looks like I'll have to recreate them all from scratch. Opening the original file again and running it through the TM is therefore not an option.
I've tried downloading various applications to view xliff files but all of them say the file is corrupt. I've also tried file recovery software but they don't find any previous versions of it.
