Ok, so to start...I am a "newbie" freelance translator and as I come across more difficult and more often translations I have decided to get Trados, but seems I do not know much about how to get it...I have discovered that there are 30 days trials and so on, but my main concern is whether you can have Trados only if you buy it? (it is not very cheap ) or is it some way you can download it from the Internet for free?
Thanks you very much for the answer!

remember that this is a professional website, and discussion of pirated software is not allowed.

There are some free CAT tools good for beginners, you can start with them: Metatexis Lite, an older vestion of Wordfast Classic, and some others.

There is an option for you. Jan 16, 2013

Trados Studio offers a starter edition, affordable: 99 euros per year.

You can learn it using online tutorials posted by SDL Trados on Youtube.

There are also free CAT tools, such as OmegaT, and other not expensive tools. If you are seriously thinking to become a professional translator, you should own a license.

Trados has different pricing in your region, buy from local resellers. Regular price is about 420 EUR + VAT for full Studio 2011 freelance license. Also there are promotions all the time (at least 4 times a year I think) which usually give 30% to 40% discounts (e.g. full Studio freelance package was 275 EUR + VAT during end of the year sale).

If Trados is too expensive for your budget, you should consider free and inexpensive alternatives, such as the ones I recently had a quick look at here:

OmegaT ->
MemSource ->
Wordfast Anywhere ->
CafeTran ->
MetaTexis ->

Several of them will let you translate documents in the .sdlxliff format used by SDL Trados Studio.
