I'm working with trados Studio freelance plus 2011 and have sometimes problems with big files (PDF, Excel), so that my Trados works very slowly or need 5 minutes to open a file. A person on this forum told me: the best is to buy a new computer! Improving my RAM would have no effect, so a specialist.
My question is: what do I have to consider before buying a new laptop? the Processor Type, the Processor Speed, the RAM Size, the Hard Drive Size?

For information, my computer features:, HP p6335fr, penthium dual core CPU 2,60 GHz, RAM 4 Go, 64 bits. Windows 7, 2009.

Thanks a lot for your support!

This story reminds me of my friend who has "caught" a computer virus and called a computer specialist for help. The guy arrived with a large screwdriver, opened the computer, and told: just buy a new computer.

The parameters of your computer are absolutely fine for using Studio (and most other programs); in fact, even 2GB RAM would be enough, though the more the better, of course. Better do a good cleanup of the disk (and, by the way, check if you have enough room there), and use a good program to speed up the OS - something like RegCure Pro or similar).

I agree 100% Mar 28, 2013

with Natalie! I had the same problems as you, I solved it by searching these forums. There's a particularly useful thread about Trados 2011 SP2 being slow.

What solved my issues was adding Trados system processes to my excluded programs list in my virus scanner (Windows Defender in my case which many have experienced Trados performance issues with) and updating my java.

Don't shell out just yet, unless you wanted a new computer anyway!icon_smile.gif

FYI, I've got a desktop PC with a Quad CPU 2.40GHz 4GB of RAM (Vista 32-bit Pro) and Studio 2011 - not saying that it's slow but memory usage goes up to 60% depending on the type and size of file.

I've also got a laptop Core i7 2.00 GHz with 8GB of RAM (Win7 & 8 64-bit Pro dual boot) no SSD drive and the difference is staggering - Studio 2011 and any other application boot up in just a few seconds and memory usage has never exceeded 20% so far and I've punished it as hard as I could. Studio 2011 is not even a 64-bit application, I've got at least one CAT tool that is a 64-bit application and it opens instantly, same with Office 2010 (64-bit).
