Making TMs visible in SDL Trados Studio 2011

I am just getting started with Trados and have a question:
I have received a TM file together with the source text.
I have managed to include in the project, and it is visible in "Translation Memories".
Will the TM automatically come up as a suggestion in the file, or do I have to change anything?
I have searched in both Trados and Google - but still haven't managed to find it out.

Tips & tricks, anyone?

Just change whatever needs changing Mar 28, 2013

If the text already in the TM says,

"Jane went to the movies"

and the text in the document you are translating says,

"Mary went to the movies",

just change "Jane" for "Mary" in the text that Studio presents to you ("Jane went to the movies") from the TM on the right side panel of the Editor window (the window at the bottom where you input your translations).

After that, when you press Ctrl+ENTER or Ctrl+Alt+ENTER, two things will happen:
1) the new translation unit will be added to the TM,
2) that segment of your work document will be translated.

After that, your TM will have two separate, different translation units (each English + Norwegian):
1) Jane went to the movies
2) Mary went to the movies

Good luck

If you download TermIjector from OpenExchange you will be able to streamline your workflow even more by using as set of replacement rules.
