Hi all (and SDL support, I am hoping!)

Trying to open a couple of very large TMs (sdltms) (from a client's project) in Studio 2011 SP2. Get the message below for both of them. (Needless to say, I don't find it very enlightening!)

I have googled the issue, and tried to search this forum for clues, but no luck so far.

Assistance would be very much appreciated.

(Would have asked for support on the SDL website, but the link to (non-paid) support is not working, and a search of the site wasn't any help.)

best wishes

Which version of Studio 2011... Apr 17, 2013

... are you using? There was a problem like this affecting some users that has been resolved in 2011 SP2R:

The solution finder is the way to go for issues like this without a support contract. Go to the Knowledgebase;

http://kb.sdl.com

Then go to the tab called Solution Finder and now go here;

Download & Installation Problems
- The installation went fine, but now I get an error message when opening or using the program.
-- The error occurs in SDL Trados Studio 2011

Then complete all the fields in the form making sure your email address is entered correctly or nobody will be able to get back in touch with you.

I hope this helps.

Regards

Paul

Broken Links Apr 17, 2013

Hi Paul

Thanks for your reply. I have taken note of the path to Studio 2011 support salvation!

Re the broken links, I found quite a few as I was wandering lost and confused around the various sites:

1. Help menu (Studio 2011 SP2 10.2.3001.0) > SDL on the Web > SDL support centre goes to support.sdl.com and yields “The page cannot be displayed because an internal server error has occurred.”

2. Searching for support on Translationzone.com gave:
Unable to write to log file (C:\\logs\\Producthelp logs\\en\\genSearch.log). Check that you have specified the correct log filename in your Indexer settings and that you have the required file permissions set.
and a link to http://producthelp.sdl.com/SDL_Trados_Studio_2011/client_en/SDL_Trados_Studio_Help.htm
When I chose support from that page it led to support.sdl.com so I got the error message as at 1.
(I also got to support.sdl.com from another link which I’m afraid I can’t replicate, and got HTTP Error 400. The request hostname is invalid.)

3. When I searched for support at http://www.translationzone.com/en/translator-products/sdl-trados-studio-professional/ I got
Temporarily unavailable
Sorry, we're temporarily updating this page! Please check back soon, after we have finished updating our content.

and finally
4. Confusing but not broken

http://www.translationzone.com/en/translator-home.asp has a support heading ”getting help” which states that free licensing and installation support is available to all customers, but then goes on only to describe paid support services and provides links only to them.

It’s a jungle out there!

Regards

Judith

Re which version and SP2R Apr 18, 2013

Paul

Thank you for the above suggestion of updating, which did fix my problem!

I'm probably being a trouble-maker today, but can I suggest that SDL adopts a more specific name up front for upgrades? I don't know if I'm alone in this, but when I'm alerted to the fact that there's an upgrade and I go to SDL and find that it's called "SP2" I conclude that I'm up to date -- unless I take the trouble to read the actual file name in tiny print underneath and compare that with my previous install file.

Designations like "S2R" are fine, I get that there's a difference from SP2, but perhaps this informal(?) designation could be used more consistently, or even be given prominence in the download area:-).

My two bobs' worth

Regards

Judith

postscript: seeking clarification on SDL support policy May 16, 2013

Just one more point to make on this old posting..

I have just suffered from another not very informative Studio 2011 error message.

I thereupon decided -- so as to avoid the official website help maze I detailed in earlier posts -- to take SDL support's advice given in this topic earlier:

The solution finder is the way to go for issues like this without a support contract. Go to the Knowledgebase;

http://kb.sdl.com

Then go to the tab called Solution Finder and now go here;

Download & Installation Problems
- The installation went fine, but now I get an error message when opening or using the program.
-- The error occurs in SDL Trados Studio 2011

Then complete all the fields in the form making sure your email address is entered correctly or nobody will be able to get back in touch with you. and go to the solution finder instead.

and got back the following response from SDL a day later:

Please note that this support area is entirely dedicated to installation and licence questions. The reported issue is a typical specialised support problem linked to the usage of our software.

Since you do not have a support contract, our specialised support team won’t be able to handle your request.

We kindly refer you to our online knowledge base that you will find in your customer center account: http://kb.sdl.com or, check the SDL Trados user forums on:
http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/TW_users or http://www.proz.com/forum/65

The problem you have is related the the mentioned path in the error you get. Please check this settings.

If you wish to have more information on support contracts, feel free to email .

Thanks for your understanding.

So can I ask SDL what the real situation is? Is it the case that no support is available for anything but licensing and installation of Studio 2011 unless you pay?

Clarification would be appreciated.

Regards

Judith
