Hello,

I'm using the trial version of SDL Trados Studio 2011 and received a file from a client that is a .rtf file - which I believe is an "unclean" file. FYI, I'm new to Trados (been using other tools), so please bear with me on this one.

The .rtf file has lines similar to this one:
< ID 0001098 > {0>Program description < c:1278 >-< c:1279 >: < }0{> < 0}

I tried to create a project in Trados 2011, but when I added the .rtf file, the tool marked the file's usage as "Reference". Since this is the only file in the project, I don't have another one that could be marked as "Translatable". If I try to change the rtf file's usage into "Translatable", I get the message "The file 1 of the 1 selected files was not changed to translatable, because no matching file type could be found. You have to add a suitable file type via Project Settings". FYI, I have the original (PDF, hundreds of pages), and the .rtf assigned to me is only the first chapter from the PDF.

If I open the .rtf file using File > Open > Document, without creating a project, I get the message "This file type is not supported".

I'm using memoQ 6.2 now, and it opens the file for translation without issues, but I haven't tried to save it to .rtf format.

I'd still like to give a try using Trados 2011, since I'm about to sign up for the current group buy (to get the Trados 2011 + Trados 2007 bundle), but I wonder what I may be doing wrong here.

Sorry if what I'm experiencing is something easy that even a newbie should know, but I'm running out of ideas.

Environment: Windows 8, SDL Trados 2011 (trial), MS Office professional 2013

Thanks!

Hello,

This issue was solved by opening the .rtf file with Word, and saving it as a .docx file (with compatibility with previous versions of Word checked).

Opening the .docx in Trados Studio 2011 worked fine.

Thanks!
