SDL 2009 and Excel. Issues with Layout, can anybody help?

I am translating a rather large Excel file in SDL 2009, word count is about 14,000 words.
The problem is that the target file seems to add extra spaces in. Also, SDL seems to ignore
the layout in the source column.
Now, is there anything I have overlooked in the Project Settings so that I can lock the
formatting and proceed with translation to obtain faithful layout of text?
My only other tedious option is to check everything through in Excel, which I will likely do just the same, but I want to keep any corrections on the Excel generated file to a minimum.
