Yesterday I got a Project Package from a client. I opened it the usual way. Now double clicking the first file to translate, I cannot confirm the segment and get the message "reference not set to an instance of an object” and then “TM update failed”.
There is no way I can confirm the segments, so cannot start my translation.
I already have tried many tips I found here and on the internet, but nothing resolved this issue.

It seems that this package doesn´t include automatically the TMs and the Termbase.
I´ve tried to connect them, but get error messages every time (this TM will not be used for following language pairs (UK-DU). To edit TM used for these language pairs, go to the individual language pair level) (the tembase could not be connected so term recognition cannot use this termbase. The default termbase could not be connected so term recognition has been disabled.)

This is really driving me mad. I´ve asked my client already to send me the package again, because it might contain some kind of error. But the new package my client prepared does the same thing. If you open Project Packages this should contain all included TMs, termbases etc. automatically, shouldn´t it? What goes wrong here?

I have to say that I´m not a real crack on Trados 2011 yet, but opening a Package never resulted being so tough. I made lots of use from the SDL videos on Youtube, and it all seems so simple when you watch them.
And my biggest concern is really if this is my mistake, my client´s or that Trados has some kind of bug.

Expensive time is passing by when trying and trying without any result.

Hopefully someone can give me a lead...

Any response will make my day!
Thanks so much in advance.

Astrid

One of the most common issues with packages... Jul 31, 2013

is that you and your client don't have the same Studio version (Service Packs included).

You won't be able to work with the package as is and deliver a return package, but you certainly can work directly with the .sdlxliff files and use all the termbases and TMs included. If your client is OK with receiving just the .sdlxliff files, you can:

1) Rename the package to .zip and extract it to access its contents.
2) Open the .sdlxliff files for the correct target language in Studio (take into account there are 2 sets of .sdlixliff files, and if you choose the incorrect one the next step won't work).
3) Link the Tms/Termbases.
4) Work as usual.
5) Save each file using the "Save as" option and choosing .sdlxliff.

For some packages, you will still get the "reference not set to an instance of an object" error when pressing enter to go to the next row, but you can circumvent this by simply using the down arrow (not sending to TM, etc.) and then globally changing the rows status to "Translated". Not ideal, but it works.

Check first if the client agrees with receiving just .sdlxliff files though...

p.s. Edited to add that it's a good idea to copy all the source segments to target, save the files and send the client these "test" .sdlxliff files to ensure they are able to open and process them on their end before beginning the translation.
