Hi all,

For some time now I've been trying to get Studio to type in the two signs (≥ and ≤) using the ALT codes - no luck. Is there any special thing I should do to get this to work? Or is there perhaps some special reason why this is not possible in studio?

I've tried many varieties of the ALT code - was able to get this working in the system shell (Win7) and in MS Word, but not in Studio....

Not in the least :( Aug 4, 2013

Thanks for the attempt, but these give me "d" and "e", respectively...

They worked for me... Aug 4, 2013

... but it may vary depending on your keyboard. Perhaps you can try 242 and 243?

Paul

Googled it already Aug 5, 2013

Hi Paul, nice to see you here - the blog's great!

Well, actually I should have perhaps written, that the problem right now exceeds the competences of a more (or less) advanced Windows network administrator - we've been searching high and low for solutions, mapping the symbols on different character tables etc. The only solution we've got until now is using an extended clipboard and assigning these symbols to shortcuts.

However, I'm just wondering wheteher there is any particular reason Studio will NOT work with this?

242 = ˛
243 = ˇ

0242 = ň
0234 = ó

Num Lock Aug 5, 2013

That might be quite obvious, but just in case, remember to click on Num Lock to disable the writing of numbers and enabling the key functions-

PLEASE DISREGARD MY COMMENT. My Studio also fails to insert the greather than equal to symbol.

Regars

Entering ≤ and ≥ Aug 5, 2013

Hi,

ok - I can see the problem now and I have it myself. I have been unable to find a way to enter these using Alt Codes directly so I will log this as a bug for investigation.

In the meantime I suppose there are a few workarounds. First of all I imagine that this is probably in the source anyway so the easiest way is copy and paste from source?

The second way is to use the QuickInsert as this does work. So I can create an item for each character and select it with the mouse through the QuickInsert menu. It is clunky at the moment as they cannot be easily accessed but this will change in the near future in the new version.

I also had a play with AutoHotkey but I could not make this work either because my AHK scripts are Win1252 encoded and this character is not supported in there. It may be possible to do something by editing a registry key for hexadecimal code input... but doing this didn't allow a direct entry to Studio either.

So in the absence of anyone clever who can explain how to do this I think the only options for now are copy/paste and QuickInsert.

Regards

Paul

Of course you can Aug 5, 2013

...but this does not solve the productivity issue. I can copy the source segment, I can copy the signs, I can do a lot of things - but typing this from keyboard disrupts the workflow the least.

two additional suggestions Aug 6, 2013

...for workarounds:
1) Using a text expansion tool such as PhraseExpress or Breevy (these are the ones I know, I'm sure that there are more tools of this kind available), which could also be useful in general.

2) Using a placeholder, i.e. wherever a greater-than or less-than symbol appears you can insert a unique string e.g. :gt: or :lt:, and at the end of the work batch search and replace them with the appropriate symbol.

Neither are perfect, but I found them to be quite useful in different situations that require (or at least can benefit from) some text manipulation.
