Dear members,
we have received several xml files from a client which require translation from English into French. Some of the files are pure English source files, but some of them have a mixed content of English and French. Hence Trados Studio2009, which we are using, can't open this file since it cannot detect the source language. So we have a few questions:

Dear members,
we have received several xml files from a client which require translation from English into French. Some of the files are pure English source files, but some of them have a mixed content of English and French. Hence Trados Studio2009, which we are using, can't open this file since it cannot detect the source language. So we have a few questions:
1) How can we open this kind of xml file with 2 mixed languages as source languages in Trados? 2) Does it work at all or do we require another program? 3) What would be another solution to open and translate the documents? (We do not want to translate in Notepad since this is too prone to cause mistakes).
We are really looking forward for your kind help since this is a big projects.
Thanks a lot,
Christin from Lingual Consultancy Services ▲ Collapse

These are the two error messages which we receive:
1) Ungültige Datei auf Stammebene. Zeile 1, Position 1.
2) Unerwartete XML-Deklaration. Die XML-Deklaration muss der erste Knoten im Dokument sein. Davor sind keine Leerzeichen zulässig. Zeile 1, Position 4.
Does anyone know these error messages plus does anyone know what they mean and how to resolve the problem?
Thanks a lot,
Christin

You need to create...

... a custom XML file to handle these things. You can do this by treating the file as monolingual using the UI in Studio, although you may have to do a little work if the content for one of the lang elements is a mixture of languages already.
If you want a proper bilingual xml file this is probably relatively simple to create too, but would have to be done through the SDK by a developer.

A similar question was asked, and answered here last week. Might be helpful.
