Hello, all

Maybe you can help me with this issue.

How I manage to insert a greek type into a segment?

I usually write the desired character in a word page, and I cut-and-past to Studio, but I am sure there is a more perfomant way for doing this action.

Explanation for dummies please!!!

Thanks in advance

Why not Greek layout? Feb 19, 2014

If you need Greek letters very often, why not enable the Greek layout?

I have no idea either because I don’t know which operating system you use. Refer to the respective manual.

Normally you’d add the characters... Feb 19, 2014

... if there are not too many, to your quick inserts for the files you work with. Described here in a blog article : http://wp.me/p2xDjK-uS

This works but it’s not necessarily a great solution if you work with multiple filetypes using these characters. So you could also consider using something like Autohotkey that is also discussed in the same article... at least the principles are discussed, not necessarily the use with Greek letters.

A better solution may well be available through the OpenExchange soon. I have in Beta a plugin that adds this to your ribbon:

So you can add special chars from the windows charmap directly into Studio, and the 12 recently used are also added to the ribbon interactively and assigned a keyboard shortcut so you can add them with a single click from the ribbon or using shortcuts. I don't have a date for this but I imagine it will be soon.

Paul

An add-on to ribbon.... Feb 19, 2014

..... is just the solution I was looking for...

Is great to know that SDL is working in such approach.

So I will wait for it.

In the time, I will make a glance to the blog you quoted.

Thanks Paul! You are so helpful as even.

... see this article. A new language icon will appear on your taskbar. You can then toggle through the available options with ALT+CAP.

For Modern Greek, you can install the standard monotonic keyboard but if you are writing Ancient Greek, you'll need the polytonic version. Here's a PDF that is quite helpful.

Adding a Greek keyboard is probably the best option if you use more than one file type in Studio, provided you know where to find all the letters, accents and breathings! Keep a paper copy of the keyboard layout handy until you get used to it.

Paid.
The standard Windows Greek keyboards are free... and they're not really difficult to learn...

Greek polytonic here

Thanks Feb 21, 2014

to every contribution to this post. This is my favorite feature from Proz.

I will try the app indicated by Paul (a bit expesive, is not it?) because I use routinely the customary symbols in technical papers.

I believe the keyboard swapping could be an option for somebody writting normally greek textes. Thanks also for this solution, as I was unaware about it!

it depends on what you view as expensive? € 9,99 is a one off payment and then you have this capability available to you permanently as you work, and of course it’s not just Greek because you have access to the full windows charactermap in an easy way.

I think there are always workarounds, and you could use the windows charactermap to select, copy and paste the same things. So € 9,99 is paying back a little time for the developer in providing a solution which saves copy and paste and also adds up to a dozen shortcuts, or clickable items, to the ribbon for symbols you use often.

It’s all down to choice I guess... I like the tool

Paul

…you might want to create your own keyboard layout. Not exactly a piece of cake, but it pays off if you regularly need a limited number of special characters.

Really, two licenses... Feb 21, 2014

... so 10 pounds or 24 €...

I have a Plus license, so I need a license for each SDL activation.

If the product is runs smooth... and renders ok on the clean document... I will probably fall in love with. I have already asked for the trial.
