Hi, I am putting this in a new thread to ensure it is seen by Trados support guys, I'm not entirely convinced that comments added to other people's threads get through.

So: Studio 2014, trying to align files, object reference not found error.

Following support suggestion in other thread, I had set the overall project File Type defaults for Word 2000-2003 and 2007-2013 to process files with tw4winMark style.

I today created a new TM and was trying to align into it some files that I had revised last year, got the object reference issue again.

I went to do the 'can I create a project ok' test, and at the appropriate point in the project creation wizard, I checked the file type settings.

Aha!!!

The file type default for Word 2000-2003 was set (had been populated by the default settings), BUT - the 2007-2013 flag was NOT SET (not populated by the default settings). I double checked the default settings, and they are both definitely set.

I propose that that may also be the issue for the alignment problems, i.e. this flag setting is not flowing through.

If that's rubbish, then - please can you come up with more suggestions, because this is a total blocker!

Thank you!

Does sound odd... Apr 12, 2014

Hi Sian,

Maybe you’re using Project Templates? Just a thought as you might be editing what you think is the default in File -> Options but actually it’s something else?

Another possibility is if you tried to use the old 2011 templates when you upgraded. I know it’s a pain to have to recreate things, but I would recommend not using the old templates when you upgrade.

Just a few guesses...

Regards

Paul

Seemed like such a good idea Apr 12, 2014

Hi Paul. Thanks for the answer and rats, yes, I'm sure that must have been due to using a project template from an old project. I really thought I might have found the problem and got all excited.

So... that still leaves me not being able to align the files because of the object ref. message. Still urgently looking for suggestions...

Any other thoughts, please?

Thanks!

New instance of alignment issue (object ref. not found error) Apr 27, 2014

Hi - I have to come back to this. I have had a new instance of it, and it is mystifying.

New TM.

Files created from online bilingual texts. Copy pasting originals, creating one source and one target language docx. Editing to get rid of line breaks and add a Heading style for titles. These are short résumés of academic texts, so in each file there are 8-12 headings (not that I think this is relevant).

I have Word 2010. I created a pair of files. I created a new TM. I successfully aligned into the new TM.

A colleague did the same thing and sent me the files. I cannot align them into the TM, I get the object ref not found error. I tried creating a clean TM for them, same issue. I copy-pasted the text without any formatting into new docs., same error.

Have you got ANY ideas, please? This is really, really causing me problems, I am trying to generate some starting specialised TM and TermBase entries for a mega project in a specialised area over a virtual translation team, and I need this stuff.

P.S. I installed the service pack but no lovely interface for alignment has appeared, what happened to my promised land?icon_frown.gif

Thanks!

Can you share the files? Apr 27, 2014

Hi Sian,

Or even a sample file that exhibits this behaviour?

On the Service Pack... we have not released it yet! You probably installed the Cumulative Update. You can expect the Service Pack this week.

Paul

Dropbox share Apr 28, 2014

Hi Paul - thanks so much for coming back to me, no problem sharing, it is public domain stuff, happily.

I have shared a Dropbox folder with you, it contains:

- Successfully aligned docx, 2011 29(3) ES and EN
- Unsuccessfully aligned docx as received from colleague, 2012 30(1) ES and EN.
- TM and tmx for the successful alignment, Agronomy TM ES-EN UK.
- TM and tmx for the unsuccessful alignment, usefully renamed 'Failed'

I have not included the reformatted versions of the failed texts, but I note that I retested today using these unedited originals as well, with the same result, so it is reproducible, consistent and not formatting-related.

I used Alignment quality value 0 and no other settings.

I also note that the failed alignment imported partially, so there may be something special about the text immediately following the last successful segment, although it looks fine to me. I think the 'Agronomy' tmx dates to before I tried to import the failed docs., so it is 'clean', but the Agronomy TM also includes the 40-odd successful segments from the failed alignment.

Really hope something turns up!

(And yes, I assumed your Cumulative Update was your Service Pack - so, more exciting times ahead!)

10 million thank yous to Paul! May 1, 2014

As a fun evening and train entertainment, the angel Paul sussed this out (with the help of the SP1 alignment UI which, when I have found the download link, I shall rapidly look to get). Some useful pointers come out of it, I think (hope I get this right) and even delivered me a clean TM. Champagne to Paul!!!

a) the alignment function uses whatever project is selected by default for its file type settings during the alignment process; so it will take the Windows style settings from there (thoughts for SDL: why not take them from the default options, not whatever project happens to be top of the list?)

b) you can check the styles out in Word and you can see if there are some that will upset things or indicate that things are upset, like tw4winError and DO_NOT_TRANSLATE - these are left over from previous version bilingual files, if I have understood correctly. You can delete these in the Word file

c) the reason alignment might take ages, and why you might end up with tag soup, is if the files are not cleaned. I knew that, theoretically, but this is the first time I've encountered kerning tags, one for almost every space, no wonder it took forever. So, file clean (select all text and Ctrl+space or click the little 'eraser' icon in Word)

It's not surprising my files were confused: scanned pdf, saved as an rtf and renamed as a doc. It didn't know which way is up.

This doesn't quite satisfy me re the copy-pasted files we were creating manually that errored - but there is probably a question of Word versions there, too - doc and docx. I shall investigate, I am particularly interested why it failed from under level 20 quality. There's something in there that I've not understood yet.

More virtual chocolate for that man, anyway!
