Dear colleagues!

I wonder if somewhere is to be found a compilation of advice on how to proceed when translating files of the most popular dtp-programs using TagEditor including the conversion into dtp-files after translation. I'm not looking for lengthy tutorials but for a list of the steps involved.
On my wish-list is also a collection of model-files, in English, which could be used for practising. Let's assume their is no previous TM, so all target languages could be used when translating these model-files.

The problem is, sometimes customers offer (mostly urgent) jobs on dtp-files or exportations of these. For us it is difficult to quote if we have no prior experience with the filetype in question and don't really know how to proceed, and mostly the customer doesn't know either. But if there were model-files we could practise beforehand and get used to the process involved.

What do you think?

Regards
Heinrich

Hello Heinrich,
Check the folder FI in Trados, to find a help icon like file, that explains what to take care of, when processing various DTP files.Regards, Brandis

Thanx, I hadn't known these. Now at least I know where to find those plug-ins.
These lengthy Trados manuals make me crazy, I had hoped for a really "simple list".
Still looking...

no simple list Nov 29, 2004

I am afraid you will not find a "simple list".
Simply because the task is not so simple. You export a document, tag it, translate, untag it and import back to DTP software. Simple.

Then you probably find out, that some tags are missing, some are redundant, so you'll fix that and when you import the text into DTP software, you'll find out that the layout is messed up, so you have to learn DTP tricks.

That happens with complicated manuals with pictures, symbols, footnotes and notes in margins. That is how majority of DTPed documents look like.

Personally I am thinking about trying that sometime, but now I am busy trying to be a good translator and I leave that business to agencies.
