Do you know of videos for beginners...?

Hello everyone

I need a colleague to use Trados and he doesn't have a clue. I would like him to watch e.g. Youtube videos, but I can't seem to find the exact topics I'm looking for. Perhaps you know of videos that explain the following things? Or, do you perhaps know guides that teach these specific things? We're using Trados 2011.

1. How to create a TM (without opening a file or a project to do it).
2. How to open an SDLPPX file, and how to make sure you're using the TM you created.
3. How to keep working on a project (a previously opened SDLPPX file) day after day.
4. How to use the most basic features, including WYSIWIG formatting of text.
5. How to create create a set of final files for every file in the project (i.e. an SDLXLIFF file plus the accompanying file in its original format, e.g. DOCX or XLSX).
6. How to create a return package.

... and these questions are mostly answered by reading through them. But I quite like your questions as I think they represent a fairly common set of questions that I have not seen off the shelf answers for. So here's my stab at these specific questions.. for Studio 2014... you said Trados (which is meaningless for me):

1. How to create a TM (without opening a file or a project to do it).
Go to the Translation Memories View. Click on the New icon in the ribbon. I created a short video to show this here : http://youtu.be/LkunAb8SADI

2. How to open an SDLPPX file, and how to make sure you're using the TM you created.

3. How to keep working on a project (a previously opened SDLPPX file) day after day.
The way to do this is covered in the previous video. But the golden rule is this... DO NOT OPEN THE PACKAGE AGAIN! When you open the package the first time this creates a Studio Project. From this moment on you only work with the Project. Archive the package, save it somewhere safe.... but DO NOT OPEN IT AGAIN!

4. How to use the most basic features, including WYSIWIG formatting of text.
Probably worth reviewing the getting started videos that are included in Studio in the Welcome View, and in the first section of the product help. You can also review how to handle tags as this is very relevant when handling formatting in the files : http://wp.me/p2xDjK-9I
There is a very helpful video here on the SDL youtube site explaining the single document translation process. Not relevant to packages so much, but the basics of how to use Studio once you start translating are covered and it's worth a review. I hope this is helpful... it was quite interesting to look at these questions and see how we could easily address these specific questions. It's also worth considering the certification courses because these do provide a methodical way to go through all the features of Studio so that by the time you get to the end you will be very aware of what you can do and how. Yes, but videos answering very specific questions have their place in the world, don't they? I myself find it very difficult to follow written instructions, even with screenshots, but a video I can watch over and over and get a grasp of what I'm being taught.

In confess that the reason why I wanted videos that deal very specifically with one topic is because my colleague is in a slow-internet expensive-internet country, so watching endless videos for little bits of information likely isn't an option for him. But even I, who live in a fast-internet free-internet country, having to sit through videos of 10-20 minutes long telling me something that really takes 1 minute to say (and show) can be a frustration.

I tried to find videos on Youtube about creating a TM, but all of the ones I found started off with opening a file, which is what one must specifically NOT DO when working with packages.

Also interesting is that many videos that deal with packages fail to impress upon the viewer that you MUST NOT open the package again the next day. For this reason I think that any tutorial that deals with packages should treat opening the package and working on the project as two very distinct actions (preferably with a reboot inbetween), and should show how the video narrator moves the package file into a subfolder called "old files" or "temporary files".

In your tutorial you open the package from within Trados, which is a good thing, but one must realise that many people will be unable to resist the temptation of double-clicking the package.

So here's my stab at these specific questions.. for Studio 2014... you said Trados (which is meaningless for me)...

You're right... the product is not called "Trados", but Studio 20xx. In my colleague's case, it's 2011, but although the program looks different in 2014 it works pretty much the same way, doesn't it?
