How reliable is Trados 2015's TMX export/import?

Hello everyone

If I export an SDLXLIFF file to TMX and then import that TMX file later (after the target text fields have been changed), will Trados 2015 update the SDLXLIFF file perfectly with the updated translations, if I use pre-translation with a 100% match threshold? For the purpose of my question, let's assume that there are no repetitions that require unique translations.

Thanks
Samuel

No round-trip fidelity Oct 1, 2015

Note that the XLIFF format (and the derived SDLXLIFF) contains vastly more options for content preservation than does TMX. So information may well be lost in the conversion to TMX, and you may not get round-trip fidelity.

That is true, but surely the TMX file is an export of what Trados displays and not of the XLIFF file itself, which means that for every tag in Trados there will be a tag in the TMX file, right?

Anyway, I used that method once (most segments had no tags, but a few of them were tag soup), and the round trip was a 100% success... except that after pre-translation against the updated TMX file, all segments are marked as 100% or CM matches, which is unfortunate but not a catastrophe.

I must add that I processed the TMX file in my other CAT tool in a way that would not make any changes to the TMX file except for the target text fields. I know that some tools parse the TMX file and re-creates it according to their understanding of the TMX standard, and that is where losses can occur.
