I wonder if anyone out there can help me. I bought a new PC and I copied my translation memory files from my old to my new PC. Unfortunately, when I load Translator's Workbench and try to open the Translation Memory, I get the following error message:

"(31050): Not a Translator's Workbench 2.x or later database: C:\Program Files\Trados\Translation Memory\Eng_Fr.tmw"

Thanks in advance

Nathalie

More info required... Feb 16, 2005

Hi Nathalie,
Can you please provide some more details?

I bought a new PC and I copied my translation memory files from my old to my new PC.

Which version of Trados were you using on your old PC, and which one are you using on the new one?
When copying the files, did you export/import the TMs, or copy the database files themselves? Assuming the latter, how many files per TM did you move?
How did you copy the files?

Do you still have access to the files on the old PC?

Best regards,
Ralf

ADDITIONAL INFO Feb 16, 2005

Hi Ralf,

Thanks for your help!

I have the same version of Trados which is Freelance 6.5.5.
I only have one TM (named En_Fr) and all I did was copy the TM along with its 4 index files onto a CD using a CD burner.

Yes, I still have the files (they're on my old laptop).

Probably read-only issue Feb 16, 2005

Hi again,
I have the same version of Trados which is Freelance 6.5.5.
I only have one TM (named En_Fr) and all I did was copy the TM along with its 4 index files onto a CD using a CD burner.

Now that might be the problem: check in Windows Explorer if the TM and its index files are write-protected (which usually happens when copying files via CD-ROM).

Yes, I still have the files (they're on my old laptop).

...in which case you could also export the TM, and re-create it on the new machine.

HTH, Ralf

Not write-protected so tip on how to export TM file Feb 16, 2005

Hi Ralf,

Me and Export, we're not the best of friends! I'm currently having problems with Microsoft Outlook and I'm dreading doing it with Trados.

Anyway, I've opened the TM file in Workbench and I've clicked on Export...

In the Export window, I don't know what to select in the Field List box (Under Segments: English (United Kingdom)? French (France)? etc... Under System Fields: Created on:? Or do I add them all?

Should have used the Help Function Feb 16, 2005

Hi Ralf,

I am getting help from the Help menu. I wll keep you posted if I need your expert advice. If you had not told me that I need to export my files, I would not have got anywhere.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed. Hope it works!

Exporting TMs is straightforward Feb 16, 2005

Hi,

Me and Export, we're not the best of friends! I'm currently having problems with Microsoft Outlook and I'm dreading doing it with Trados.

A TM export has nothing whatsoever in common with an export from Outlook.

Anyway, I've opened the TM file in Workbench and I've clicked on Export...

In the Export window, I don't know what to select in the Field List box (Under Segments: English (United Kingdom)? French (France)? etc... Under System Fields: Created on:? Or do I add them all?

Simple answer: you add nothing. The window shows a filter constraints list, so you would only need to add things if you wanted to filter the export. Just click on OK and save the file.

Best, Ralf

I knew I needed your expert advice at some popint Feb 16, 2005

Hi Ralf,

In the "Create Export File" window, what file type do I select:
Is it; .txt; TMX 1.1 (*.tmx) or TMX 1.4 (*.tmx)?

In the help, they mention "If you're exporting a file in TMX Level 2 format, choose the *.tmx file type..." but really I haven't got a clue. How do I know if my file is in TMX Level 2 format and then how do I know whether to choose TMX 1.1 or 1.4?

How do I import the TM file? Feb 16, 2005

Hi Ralf,

I looked in the Help but can't seem to be able to import the TM file from Workbench. Do I just copy the file in the folder?

I then simply copied the *.txt file into my "Translation Memory" folder but since it's just a text file it will let me open a *.tmx file.

I tried File... Import but... Feb 16, 2005

Hi Ralf,

From Workbench, I cannot select "Import.." which is greyed. In the Help, it asks to open the Host Translation Memory but what is it?

Did you create a new TM before importing? Feb 16, 2005

Hi Nathalie,
From Workbench, I cannot select "Import.." which is greyed.

Did you create a new TM?

In the Help, it asks to open the Host Translation Memory but what is it?

That's up to you to decide - the host TM is the TM into which you want to import the data.

Here are the steps you must carry out:

- Export the TM on your old machine (done).
- Create a new TM on your new machine.
- Import the file you exported from your old machine.

HTH, Ralf
