I'd love to be able to affect how it determines segments.

I'd love to be able to CORRECT those things once it's done (join orphan words to their sentences, etc.)

Is that possible?

Sure, that's possible.

Search the software documentation or the net for "join segments", "merge segments" or, if you want to go deeper, "segmentation rules" etc.

Following some basic tutorials about the use of you CAT tool may be helpful, too.

Erik, thanks!

I know how to join segments, but the funny thing is that it doesn't allow you to do that in virtually exactly the situations where one wants to.

And when I looked up segmentation rules - I found things that explained them, but not ways to adjust/alter them. Can we alter them? Where would I look to find out how?

Thanks!

You're probably experiencing one of the major long-time shortcomings of Studio, i.e. the inability to join segments across paragraph marks. Of course, there should never be paragraph marks within a sentence. The developer's reasoning for not offering this function, which purportedly would be difficult to implement, has long been "those shouldn't be there in the first place, so it's the fault of the author of text."

What most of us do is to delete any superfluous paragraph marks in the source text before importing the file.

You can change them in the TM settings - language resources. The way this is handled in Studio unfortunately makes changing segmentation rules impossible without some knowledge and experience in programming (regex) - it's ridiculously complicate, unreliable, and poorly documented. SDL support is your friend. I've seen cases in this very forum where SDL specialists needed two or three "I think I got it" before they actually got it.

Erik, yes, that makes sense of everything.

It also means, basically, that it's difficult to ameliorate the problems I'm asking about, but it always feels better to have clear view of the situation!

Thank you.

How to remove superfluous paragraph breaks Nov 16, 2015

Hello,

To remove false paragraph breaks from Microsoft Word, you can use a special tool called Unbreaker. It detects incorrect paragraph breaks and allows you to remove them quickly from the whole document. The tool uses a number of heuristics to determine which paragraph breaks need removal, and presents the list of certain and uncertain "hits" so you can correct the detection results before removing these paragraph breaks.

Unbreaker is part of Microsoft Word add-in called TransTools for Word.

Best regards,
Stanislav Okhvat
