Hello
I have experience using the Freelance edition of a previous version of Trados Studio. Buying the Freelance edition of Trados Studio 2015 isn't really in my budget right now. I'm wondering if the Starter edition of Trados Studio 2015 is sufficient for receiving and completing projects from a translation company/bureau? Is a client likely to ask me to use the functions that are not available with the starter version?

Thank you for your help.

Alternative software for processing SDLXLIFF & SDLPPX files Jan 1, 2016

Rather than Studio Starter Edition, you may want to consider a full-fledged, yet reasonably priced tool like CafeTran, which can handle both SDLXLIFF (documents) and SDLPPX (packages) file types. These are the most common requirements from "Trados clients".

CafeTran is available both as an annual subscription (80 euros, ie. cheaper than Studio Starter Edition) and as a one-time purchase (200 euros, ie. a fraction of the cost of Studio Freelance Edition).

To compare them, watch my "First steps with..." videos:

Hello Gustaf,

This is Guillaume from SDL.

We have a useful comparison table which highlights the differences between the SDL Trados Studio 2015 ‘Starter’/ ‘Freelance’ and ‘Professional’ editions - http://www.translationzone.com/en/translator-products/sdl-trados-studio/#tab2

Studio ‘Starter’ and ‘Freelance’ versions cannot be installed within a corporate server domain and may be used only from within a Local LAN.

Before purchasing SDL Studio 2015 STARTER-
-you are advised to check the above version comparison chart to ensure the reduced functionality will indeed meet your translation needs
If you are a full time professional freelance translator-
We suggest the 'Freelance PLUS' version, which provides you with TWO activations per license – ensuring a flexible safe and secure working environment.

Kind regards,

Guillaume

What to tell 'Trados' transl.bureaus when you have CafeTran? Mar 30, 2016

That sounds interesting, Dominique! Some translation bureaus I would like to work for require Trados. How do such companies react when you say "No, but I have CafeTran, which is fully compatible"? Or don't you mention the fact and do you say you have SDL Trados. I would feel a bit uneasy about the latter option myself (plus, then CafeTran would need to be a 100% compatible, and not 'only' 98 or 99% ...).
