Just installed Trados Studio 2017 (halfway through a 50,000 word project - what can I say, I'm a risk taker!)

License upgrade, download and installation all went without a hitch (about 15 minutes total)

Launched the software and the first thing I saw was the ability to drag and drop a file to translate on the home page (finally!).

Installed the 'adaptiveMT' - no idea how that's going to work/factor in, except for a list of single words in separate cells (like countries, currencies, etc.), I've never found MT to be of any use.

Loaded the big project - no issues - the layout of the Editor tab seems to be the same, except for 'fragment matches' in addition to TM results & concordance search.

I'll update in a few hours after I've put the software through its paces.

Going for it Nov 16, 2016

I just backed up my project folder and took the plunge with a small project. I've spent some time recreating my keyboard shortcuts and getting it looking like 2015; not hard to do but tedious.

SDL - shouldn't Studio automatically pick up the options for an existing installation, or at least ask if we want them imported? Would have saved me 20 minutes.

I'm liking the look of the advanced display filter. More in a day or two.

Regards
Dan

Seriously, they created a 2015->2017 app to transfer everything, but I wanted to get a feel for the program so I went in manually.

Haven't been able to take the adaptive MT out for a try even with the free trial because the engines seem to be variant bound and there's no French Canadian.

You need first to upgrade your TMs Nov 16, 2016

Hi Ariane, Paulo and Dan

Just a small word to inform you that in order to take advantage of the new upLIFT features such as "Fragment Matching" and "Fuzzy Match Repair", you need first to "upgrade" your TMs. This will take some time depending on the size of your TMs (approx. 5'000 TUs/min. depending on the performance of your HW).

These features will not work just like this "out of the box". I suggest you read the corresponding instructions on how to do this.

Walter

I'll wait for the update Nov 16, 2016

Unfortunately, the bug with missing number display in Autosuggest makes 2017 quite unusable for me (quite a lot of numbers in my translations). Looking forward to the update to address this issue.

I hadn't realized that! (I'm on a smaller client-specific TM rather than my main 2GB one, so I'll give the upgrade a try!)

Uplift - different than what we saw? Nov 16, 2016

Correct me if I'm wrong, but from the exchange with Mr Flanagan, I got the impression that Lift/upLift was supposed to be based on linguistic approach.
However, now I can see that the solution uses statistical methods, which seems a bit disappointing, because you need a fairly large database to receive good results.
Could anyone comment on this? Has this been changed in the course of development?

Necessary to migrate Studio 2015 TMs? Nov 16, 2016

Thank you for that pointer Walter. I checked out the SDL Trados Studio 2017 Migration Guide but this seems to focus on users migrating from old versions, such as 2007, rather than 2015. I can't see anything related to upgrading Studio 2015 TMs.

Dan

QoL Nov 16, 2016

Noticed 2 other nice QoL changes :

1) when you run an analysis and open the reports, the new report loads (rather than the last opened report)
2) you can edit terms in MT on the fly without clicking on "edit term" - if you "view term details" from term recognition, the entries are immediately editable; you can also add terms to the same entry (nice when you're creating cross-referenced acronyms and terms).

I've seen the upLIFT function in effect once so far - I almost missed it - I'm going to have to retrain my eye to look at the target up top in the TM rather than than down in the cell only - it's marked as a wrench beside the match percentage - in the target side of the TU, a term was crossed out and another was inserted (same as fuzzy matches are indicated in the source side of the TU). Basically you could call it fuzzy matching in the target.

Cannot set the active view to a view that is disabled or not available Nov 17, 2016

When I tried to exit after finishing work, the main translation grid (editor source/target) disappeared and 2017 refused to quit with a "Cannot set the active view to a view that is disabled or not available" error. Eventually I had to kill it with task manager. When I restarted, my layout had disappeared. Other settings (fonts, colours) were not lost. I rearranged my layout and tried to quit. It did so with no problem and my layout was stored correctly. Odd.

indeed Lift in Studio 2017 = (currently) sans linguistic smarts Nov 17, 2016

There was some confusion there. Can't find the ref, but (from what I remember reading in the beta group) basically, the Lift/upLIFT stuff based on linguistic knowledge didn't make it into Studio 2017. It is currently only available/planned for some kind of server thingee. Can't remember the details. Will see if I can find the ref.

It's in the TM's individual settings somewhere. Nov 17, 2016

It's in the TM's individual settings somewhere. Uninstalled 2017 on my current PC so can't look right now. It's there though. There are two steps you need to do on each old TM, for it to be able to use the new Fragment Alignment feature. Or whatever its called. All a bit confusing all those new names. it does work though, and is pretty cool.

So it's basically a dynamic Autosuggest dictionary with the advantage that you can see the results, which helps in prompting the autosuggest function. A bit of a let down, really.
