Reference files in Studio 2009

I am suddenly finding that a lot of Word files, which should be "translatable" when I set up a new project in Studio 2009, are appearing as "reference" rather than "translatable" and I have no reason why this is. Can anybody suggest what I might be able to do to ensure that all Word files appear as "translatable" in future?
