(posted in GER yesterday)
System/Software:
Windows 10 – latest Update of 25/01/17 (possibly effective only since last night, when switching off my PC)
SDL Trados Studio 2014 - Version 3.2.4435
SDL MultiTerm 2014 SP2 - Version 11.2.1379

Dear Colleagues and Trados-Specialists,

Even though I don’t really think this could be relevant regarding the issue I have, I may mention that yesterday one of my two monitors was exchanged for another one, with the „numbering“ of the monitors having been swapped, as far as I could see – just mentioning it, because of the coincidence…

When I meant to start on a new job today, I could open the file in TRADOS without any issue (along with the matching TM) – however, when I tried to open the termbase I needed, I only got to the first screen:

esjsdeftus4ixpjotvnc.docx

(hope the screen shot is showing above?)

As soon as I click on "Hinzu..." (Add), the screen/window shown becomes inactive, but there’s no new one opening either. Only in the document preview (i.e. only when hovering with the cursor over the TRADOS icon in the task bar at the bottom of the monitor) I can see there’s another screen/window trying to open, but that (preview-)one is showing up as empty/white.

Even when I minimize everything else, so that my desktop image is visible, all I can see is something like a „ghost-window“, i.e. I can see the silhouette of a window, it appears to be nothing but a 3D-effect.

The screen/window shown in the screen shot above, however, cannot be closed either (neither by clicking on the X in the upper right hand corner, nor by clicking on „close“ – everything’s inactive) – the only way I can get out is by clicking on the Xs of the above mentioned previews (i.e. the one relating to the screen shown in the screen shot above, and the other one relating to the „ghost“-window).

Tried so far – but in vain:

- Closing / reopening TRADOS
- Switching off / restarting my PC (multiple times, even unplugging the entire thing)
- „Repairing“ MultiTerm (Convert, Core, Desktop und Word Integration) + SDL Trados Studio 2014 SPE

SDL-Licences (as per SDL-Account):

- SDL Trados Studio 2014 Freelance Plus => In Use: 1 / Available: 0
- MultiTerm => not listed (anymore) !? => Contained in Trados-Licence?

Questions:

- Who can help/who knows, how I can get my termbases to open again?
- Who knows FOR SURE, whether MultiTerm is contained in my TRADOS-License, so that I could try and de-/re-install the programme, hoping this may fix the issue?

Any help, hint and suggestion is greatly appreciated!
Cheers and a big THANK YOU in advance,

Ulrike

Hi Ulrike, Jan 29, 2017

first we need to know if your termbase is a file-based termbase (created by MultiTerm and stored on your computer) or a web termbase from a server or else. For web termbases I don't know (because I don't use them). For problems with file-based databases:

Check that your termbase is really installed on your computer, remove all termbases in the project settings and add them again.
If it's only the 'Termbase recognition' window in Studio's editor that doesn't show, then you must reset the window layout, quit Studio and open again. This should solve the problem.
Else, it gets more complicated: Can you open the termbase with MultiTerm? Tell me if the above doesn't work.

Greetings,
Mike

Thank you, Mike, Jan 29, 2017

for taking the trouble to try and help at this time of the night...

As to your questions/suggestions:

- first we need to know if your termbase is a file-based termbase (created by MultiTerm and stored on your computer) => YES, file-based

- Check that your termbase is really installed on your computer => YES, checked, all installed on my PC

- remove all termbases in the project settings and add them again => Sorry, Mike - not very clued up on "this kind o'stuff"... wish I could get my screen shot to show up, but in TRADOS, when I go to WELCOME => Tab START => clicking on PROJECT SETTINGS, then the very screen pops up which I call-up from the EDITOR to add termbases: so this is the very screen of which I took a screen shot, but as described before, when I click on "add" so as to select my acutal termbase I want to work with, things are not moving further - that's the very point where I get stuck. But getting back to your suggestion, when I do click on PROJECT SETTINGS, the screen comes up, but the top right hand field (TERMBASES: - activated/termbase/filter - with the "add" button below) is empty => thus there's nothing there for me to remove and ADDING is exactly the thing that doesn't work - as soon as I click on "add" this screen goes inactive, while the next one (which used to pop up, showing my termbases, so could select one) doesn't pop up anymore...

- If it's only the 'Termbase recognition' window in Studio's editor that doesn't show, then you must reset the window layout, quit Studio and open again. => please, could you explain, how I should go about with this one?

- Can you open the termbase with MultiTerm? => I confirm I can open MultiTerm => opening the view "TERMBASE MANAGEMENT" shows me practically blank screen (apart from the menues) => clicking on the tab "FILE" and further on "OPEN TERMBASES" brings me back to the same blank screen, with the only difference that now I cannot click onto anything else anymore, whatever I try to click on just gives me one of those "error" pings (even when trying to close MultiTerm - have to close via task manager)...

My apologies, Mike, for not being able to describe things better...

Some more basic questions Jan 30, 2017

Ulrike,
From your responses I'm not totally sure wether you are using Trados Studio correctly, or if some file corruptions/deletions or other actions you have done recently on your computer have caused Studio (and MultiTerm) not to work anymore. Changing monitors should not be the cause of such problems.

Have you created a project for your translation? If not you must create one by going through the different steps starting with the 'Project View' button and chosing New Project. Then go through the steps. If you don't know something the Online Help is there for you. If you have already created a project, then:

Click on the 'Project view' button on the left. Are there projects listed? Is your project the active one hilighted in black? If not double-click on your project.
Still in the Project View with your project activated, click on "Project Settings" on the upper left of the window, and navigate as follows:
Language Pairs > All Languages Pairs > Termbases
Are there termbases listed in the right part? The first one should have the checkbox activated for 'Enabled'. If there are no termbases you must add them and they must contain the right languages.
And you are telling me all this is not possible to do?

If you have done this and still you are not able to add termbases, then your installation of Studio (and MultiTerm) is corrupted. Do a Windows system restore to a previous date, starting with the most recent date in the list and see if this solves the situation. Else you must repair or re-install the software.

Mike

Good morning, Mike, Jan 30, 2017

Again, thank you for your reply - I have followed your path, but get stuck at exactly the same point, let me explain:

Your question/suggestion => my comment

Have you created a project for your translation? If not you must create one by going through the different steps starting with the 'Project View' button and chosing New Project. Then go through the steps. => I don't create projects, but (from the WELCOME view) I simply go via "Translate single document" - have done it a thousand times, adding TMs and TBs as needed, never had an issue. It might be a different path, but at some point your and my path both lead to the same screen, the "stuck screen", as I will call it now...

=> that's fine, this is exactly what is shown in the left hand area of my "stuck screen"

Are there termbases listed in the right part? => No, the right hand side is empty, but for my path that is normal at this stage. I would NOW click on "Add" so as to browse and select the termbase(s) I want to add/use...

If there are no termbases you must add them and they must contain the right languages => This is the very point things get stuck (language combinations not being an issue):

As soon as I click on "Add", the stuck screen becomes inactive, but there’s no new one opening either (from which I could/used to select the termbase needed). Only in the document preview (i.e. only when hovering with the cursor over the TRADOS icon in the task bar at the bottom of the monitor) I can see there’s another screen/window "trying" to open, but that (preview-)one is showing up as empty/white.

Even when I minimize everything else, so that my desktop image is visible (making sure the screen I'm looking for is not "hiding" behind any other screens), all I can see is something like a „ghost-window“, i.e. I can see the silhouette of a window just like a 3D-effect on part of my desktop image.

The stuck screen, however, cannot even be closed (neither by clicking on the X in the upper right hand corner, nor by clicking on „close“ – everything’s inactive) – the only way I can get out is by clicking on the Xs of the above-mentioned previews (i.e. the preview of the stuck screen, and that of the „ghost“-window).

If you have done this and still you are not able to add termbases, then your installation of Studio (and MultiTerm) is corrupted. Do a Windows system restore to a previous date, starting with the most recent date in the list and see if this solves the situation. Else you must repair or re-install the software. => Afraid so...icon_frown.gif

Again, Mike, thank you so much for your willingness to help and for taking the troubleicon_smile.gif

Have a nice week and fun translating!

Cheers,
Ulrike

after reading your last response I think your Trados installation is defective, files missing or corrupt. Your version of Studio 2014 and the MultiTerm may not use Java anymore but I'm not totally sure, MultiTerm maybe still needs Java; if so, you will have to re-install the Trados software if you have somehow removed Java from your system.
I would start repairing MultiTerm and the Trados Studio installation. If still you are in trouble, Make a Windows Restore, and for last a complete deinstallation / re-installation of the Trados software.

I hope you get back working soon,
Greetings,
Mike

Again, Thank you, Mike, Feb 1, 2017

Me being everything but an IT-techie, I was rather wary of de-/reinstalling anything and being unsure about my licence situation I had to contact SDL first anyway.
After some more back an forth (for some reason, on my PC everything seems to be different compared to anybody elses), it turned out it might be a monitor issue after all - I "managed" to find the graphics settings and swapped the order of the monitors resp. their hierarchy... and - ta-taaa - things are back to normal, the next screen in the termbase-opening-procedure opens up again and I can select my termbases as usual! icon_biggrin.gif

I won't even try to understand what happened and why, I'm just happy it works again - and really grateful for your willingness and effort to help. I do appreciate that, Mike, thank you!

Hope your next "case" will make it easier for you (having more basic knowledge). icon_wink.gif

Again, thank you, and have a lovely week!

Cheers,
Ulrike

Add Termbases dialog box inactive Apr 18

Hi Ulrike,

I have the same problem with adding termbases (blank dialog box), and I also use two screens (laptop+TV screen set as default). Can you explain how you swapped the order of your screens?

Best,
Ula
