There is no BEST specification

But there are certainy good ones. A good one would be a fast processor (Athlon or Pentium IV), not the fastest, because they cost too much. Take the third onr fourth from top. Don´t buy low cost processors, even if the dealer will tell you, that they will be enough for what you do. There is no dealer outside (or I suppose at least so), who will really understand, what all his Trados (or other CAT tool) stuff is alike. When decided for the processor, take the BEST motherboard for this processor. Look at some tests and take the winner or the second winner. Take one with dual channel memory. Take proper memory modules, at least 1GB, buy brands, don´t buy no name memory. Then go for a graphics card. Take one from second last generation, ie ATI Radeon 9600 or 9800. I would recommend Radeon, as it delivers much better picture quality than nVidia. Don´t let you be ovveruned by the seller with the newest "powerful" graphic card - you will not need it, unless you will play modern games with your PC. Trados does not use 3D graphic power. A good 2D graphic card with enough memory (nowadays it is not less than 64MB, most graphic cards have 128 or more). If you can spend enough money, buy FOUR fast HDD´s (ie Seagate Barracuda or Hitachi) with approx. 80 GB each and build a stripped and mirrored RAID matrix. If you buy SATA drives, a simple controller can be optained for not much money. If you don´t want to spend so much, buy a Hitachi or Maxtor SATA drive. When buying, pay attention to computer case - this must not be the cheapest one! You will need a good power supply with at least 300 Watts for usuall configuration or at least 400 Watts if you wish to have RAID. I can recommend Chieftec for case manufacturer and Antech for power supply (only examples).
So far we are finishes, you will need optical drives and an extra HDD for backup - but they don´t play any role for working process.
When installing OS make partitions on your HDD and put ALL your documents and programs on separate partitions. This may save your life one day.
