I have a Word file of about 9,000 words but when I open it with Trados, the report says that there are about 8,000 total words... what does it means? Thank you in advance!

Word and Trados don't agree on what constitutes a word Jul 28

This is an old theme. Different software use different definitions on what constitutes a word. For instance, is a word with a hyphen 1 or 2 words?

You may want to study the following article, which goes quite deep into the subject:

The question is, of course, if the number of characters would be a better base to decide the price of a job than the number of words, since a character is a character, regardless, so the amount of characters should be the same. Of course, one would then have to agree if spaces should be counted or not, but if one agrees that it should not, the solution to that is to decide on a higher character rate.
