I am using the TRADOS 7.5 build 756, which is to my knowledge the latest released version of the softrware.

I have an XP professional and word 2003 - both with all the hot fixes and service packs one gets.

I am reporting here not a problem, but a solution to several problems I had with TagEditor.

The symptoms were varied, but Now the system works reliably again. Here's what I had to do:

"Out of memory error" - see http://support.trados.com/view.asp?cntID=1630
for the solution

"can't create Java machine" - I had Java RE version 1.5. Trados requires 1.4.x

InDesign bilingual can not be cleaned: after throwing out all the images, the 60 MB file shrunk down to 8 MB, and then there was no problem any more.

7.1 vs 7.5 TRADOSI had context problems in the sense that the solutions suggested pertained to the 7.5 version, and I had problems with the 7.1 version installed. So I kept asking for the InDesign.INI file, which my installed 7.1 version expected (even if the documentation states clearly, this version does not handle Indesign CS2). Then I checked the version and moved up to 7.5 - with one of its main points being native handling of INX files.

Looking at the Louis Lopes' TRADOS blog (http://trados.wordpress.com/), I am not the only one´with this kind of problems, so this may be of a general interest.

For the record: driven into the corner I had to pull some private strings which helped me get a concise and to-the-point answer from TRADOS support. By that time (was less than 48 hours) I had all the problems licked save for that sneaky Java thing.

Morale: given the multitude of possible configurations (Office version, Java version, Trados version) I do not think SDL TRADOS is able to test anything but what's the latest in the market. Just look at the list of languages this one and only version has to be tested in (well, to some extent at least I guess).

So when asking questions AND giving suggestions make sure that you specify versions you are using for all the components.

7.1/7.5 Jul 10, 2006

Just for the record:

I can open and edit InDesign CS2 files saved as .inx just fine here in my TagEditor (Build 720). I guess that proves you don't have to buy 7.5 just to be able to edit these files.

I have to admit, though, that I haven't tried cleaning them yet.
