Notebook + Trados 5.5 dongle Thread poster: Suzanne Deveson

Dear colleagues, I have recently invested in a notebook, but silly me, I didn't check whether it had the right type of port to plug in my TRADOS 5 dongle. I found out there is an adapter (USB to LPT), but apparently it will only work if TRADOS does not require a 'hard' LPT port. Can anyone tell me if the dongle will work with an 'emulated' port? (not sure the terminology is correct). | | | Search the forum | Dec 5, 2006 |
Hi! You have a parallel (LPT) dongle, that you want to plug in on a laptop that lacks this port, right? This has been discussed before: http://www.proz.com/post/415266#415266 http://www.proz.com/post/249744#249744<... See more Hi! That's provided your laptop has a PCMCIA slot, off course. Otherwise, consider upgrading the dongle to USB or even softkey, it's not that expensive. Some users wrote that the trade-in to USB is as cheap as 10-25-100 EUR, depending on version. Or downgrading to another laptop... Maybe swap it for an USB dongle on the Exchange (jumble sale) here on Proz if all else fail? Best, Jan ▲ Collapse | | | Margreet Logmans (X) Netherlands Local time: 11:37 English to Dutch + ... Hi Suzanne, from what I know, I'm afraid it won't work. These adapters are made for printers, not dongles. You'd best contact TRADOS Helpdesk, but I think you're going to have to upgrade your TRADOS Version. Good luck! Margreet
It could be another option - you should have at least one slot where you could insert such a card - one option is card with USB ports - usualy you get at least 2 so you wil already have a spare port for another appliance. IMHO it should work however I didn't try it myself. I wish you good luck Stanislaw

Thanks everyone for all your valuable suggestions! I did search the forum before posting, but obviously not thoroughly enough! I will try and find a PCMCIA>LPT adapter first - I don't mind upgrading, but I have been unable to establish a network between my PC and notebook so far, and I wasn't sure I could upgrade to TRADOS 7 from my notebook without the previous version of TRADOS installed on it + the dongle plugged into it... Perhaps that will be my next question... <... See more Thanks everyone for all your valuable suggestions! I did search the forum before posting, but obviously not thoroughly enough! Wow, thanks, Jan!! That makes a huge difference in price. Perhaps you could also help me with my last question. If I do decide to upgrade and install TRADOS 7 on my notebook, will I then be able to install the upgrade on my PC too, without establishing a network first? | | | 1 Trados 7 license = 2 computers | Dec 7, 2006 |
Hi Suzanne, I think it's possible, but other users surely will have hands-on experience to tell you more. There's nothing stopping you from installing Trados 7 on both computers. If the computers are on the same network, you can only run one instance at the time. But if they're disconnected, I guess there's nothing stopping you from running both?! /Jan ▲ Collapse

Thank you so much for your help. I think I may go for the upgrade, because I need to use my laptop over the next few days.
