What are <hmk>, <crmk> and <imk> tags?

I'm often getting rtf.ttx files to translate, and there are lot of above tags in the units. They seem to be anywhere, in or between words.

1) what are they?
2) how to choose their place in the target text?

You can search on Help in S-Tagger.

Use the help function of a corresponding tool Dec 12, 2006

At the beginning of tagged text you´ll find the information, from which format it was converted. So you can then consult the help file of the converter tools.
You also should read the File Formats Reference Guide, which is available in the download section on www.translationzone.com

here's a link to a document that explains a lot about working with tags in Trados; most of the frequently used tags are explained there. (if you read a little further than the intro)

You'll find that is an index marker, is a crossreference-marker and is a hypertextmarker.

I usually decide where to place them by simply choosing (in my translated text) the word or phrase that renders hte meaning of the tagged parts and copy them.
