Hello,
take a look here please:
http://halfprice.habra.com/Mirza/Bugs/transit_toc.JPG

This is a normal word table of contents. Trados cannot open its translation units inside it, why?

How do you usually work with tables of contents and Trados?

Regards,
Mirza

Usually TOC should not be separately translated. It is easily updatable after you complete the text translation.
Right click on the TOC - update all fields: you'll get all the Headers from the text you translated.

No translatable content - use forum search Feb 27, 2007

Hi Mirza,

This is a normal word table of contents. Trados cannot open its translation units inside it, why?

Because there is no translatable content inside - a TOC is a list of cross-references to headings in the document.

How do you usually work with tables of contents and Trados?

Translate the rest of the document, then update the ToC.

Note that this issue has been discussed several times before - you may want to use the forum search function.

Best regards,
Ralf

Watch for hidden bookmarks Feb 27, 2007

There are several ways to create a ToC. As Ralf says, what you see on the ToC is actually a cross reference to a part of the document where the actual entry is coded. If the entries are coded as Bookmarks you will not see them as part of the text, unless you activate the Reveal Codes or View All symbol. Activate that function to detect whether the ToC cross reference entries are inserted in the document as Bookmarks. If they are and you do not activate the View All function, TRADOS will still detect them but will display an empty row and you could inadvertently skip over it or, worse yet, ask yourself what might be going on and, in any case, you will not be able to update your ToC later on.

With View All activated you will be able to see the Bookmark, which begins with something like {tc... You will have to translate each Bookmark if you wish your ToC updated once you are done translating. If you hit an empty row, activate View All and Copy Source, and then translate only the text portion inside the strange symbols of the Bookmark. For the sake of the integrity of the ToC there are codes at the end of each bookmark which specify whether the bookmark is a level 1, 2, 3, etc. entry on the ToC and that must be kept at all cost.

Once you are done translating and cleaning the document, position yourself at the beginning of the ToC, press F9 and select Update entire table not only the pages. If the ToC contains a Bookmark error, you missed translating that specific Bookmark. Go to the indicated page, activate View All and you will see that the text in the Bookmark is in the source language. Translate and update the ToC again.

Hope that helps!
