After extensive detective work (read: "just being lucky") I propably found a fix (the "Attempt to initialize..." message was the clue).

Check if you have registry entries corresponding to
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows
NT\CurrentVersion\AppCompatFlags\Layers?
If there is "explorer.exe " as an entry, removing that
fixed the problem

Of course, you must reboot after making this change and be very careful because tampering with registry is risky.

Where do I find that? Apr 12, 2007

Could you please be more specific - where do I go looking for that entry?
Thanks
Gillian

Click Start -> Run
Type regedit in dialog box
Click OK

Look for the entry. Start from HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE and process forward opening branches in

HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\AppCompatFlags\Layers

(Note: HKLM means HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE)

After finding explorer.exe delete it by selecting it and pressing Delete.

Do you get an error message? Apr 17, 2007

France and Smatter.

Do you hear an alert sound when you start Tageditor?

If you temporarily rename TagEditor.exe.manifest file in Program files\SDL International\T2007_FL\TT to something else and start Tageditor, do you get an error message dialog box? If you do, what does it say.

I cant find "Layers" Apr 19, 2007

Hello Tapsa,

I am having trouble to start not only Tageditor but also Workbench, and Winalign after installing SDL Trados 2007 free version. Following your advise, I am searching in the HKLM registry and find until "AppCompatFlags" but there is no \Layers entry.

When attempting to start Tageditor or the other programs I get the "TW4Win.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close" error Error signature AppName: Tw4win.exe ModName : msvcr80.dll error.

Thank you very much in advance for any ideas on how to fix this problem.

Tere

Same problem here! Sep 8, 2007

I installed SDL 2007 freelance (build 822) after upgrading from 6.5.
6.5 works fine (after registering), but WB 8.0 and TE 8.0 (after registering) work for a while and the the WB shuts down (TW4 Win etc).
I contacted SDL support but no answer yet.
Has anyone a solution?
I tried the patch mentioned here, no luck.

Similar problem Oct 1, 2007

Hi, I had hoped to find a solution here since the Trados support has not replied to me either.

I installed SDL Trados 2007 (including the Patch) on both my laptop and my PC. Whenever I tried to open TagEditor, I got the error message that Trados TagEditor encountered a problem and needs to be closed. I tried deinstalling and reinstalling everything, but to no avail.

Finally, found this article on Proz.com. However, I don't seem to have a folder called "AppCompatFlags" in my registry since I could not find it at the location indicated.

In my desperation, I deinstalled the 2007 version and reinstalled the 2006 version. However, this worked only on my laptop. On my PC, TagEditor does still not open and generates the same error message. On my laptop I can open it and work in it but I cannot do any analyses anymore (error message "class not found" appears whenever I try).

Apparently, the 2007 version messed up my whole system. Is there anybody out there who might have a solution to this? Also, is there a chance to get someone at Trados respond to urgent queries even without a support contract? They sell their products for a lot of money and it is really annoying if they don't work and noone seems to take responsibility.

Cheers

Heike
