The three options when cleaning up a document... Thread poster: Martin Wenzel

Don't Update means that the translation memory is not updated in accordance with changes that have been made to translation units in the document without using Translator's Workbench. See more Don't Update means that the translation memory is not updated in accordance with changes that have been made to translation units in the document without using Translator's Workbench. Otherwise the clean up is performed as usual: the hidden source text and delimiting marks are removed altogether from the document. Don't Clean Up means that translation units in the document that differ from their counterparts in translation memory are completely ignored during the clean up process. Unlike the Don't Update option, Don't Clean Up does not remove hidden source text and delimiting marks from translation units that have been revised without using Translator's Workbench. This gives you additional control by allowing you to check differences between translation units in the document and those in the corresponding translation memory after the clean up process. Update TM means that the translation memory used during the clean up process is updated in accordance with changes that have been made to translation units in the document without using Translator's Workbench. The Update TM option involves the removal of hidden source text and Workbench delimiting marks as well. Note: If the target text of one or more document translation units has changed, Translator's Workbench checks the relevant text and attribute field settings before deciding whether to create a new translation unit or overwrite existing ones, depending on the current project and filter settings. In addition, if the translation memory supports multiple translations, Translator's Workbench checks the Always add new TU when target segments differ setting in the Tools tab of the Translation Memory Options dialog box. Update Document means that the changes made to the translation units without use of Translator's Workbench are undone in the document — the initial translations from the translation memory are used instead. What I do... | Jul 13, 2007 |
When I work with Word and Trados and have finished translating, I proofread the text and make the changes without opening and closing the segments, just as if I was working without Trados. Then I clean the document with the option "Update TM". The changes are then made in the TM too. When I work with TagEditor it is not possible to change the segments without opening/closing. So the option "Update TM" doesn't have any function, I think. Here I use the option "Update Document", becau... Hello Edith, I used to do that, too. Nowadays, I find that it is important to open and close the memories, because I had an electricity cut the other day or my computer freezes for whatever reason. The translation will thus always be in Trados and I just need to run it with my word file...

Martin Wenzel wrote: I am not so sure I can follow here Benjamin... All of these settings apply to segments that are DIFFERENT between your TM and the document. "Don't Clean Up" simply means that those differing segments will be left bilingual while all others are cleaned up. This allows you to have a second look at (only) the differing segments in the resulting file. FWIW: I never use the "Don't Clean Up" option - usually I have this set to "Update TM". Allow me a note on this subject: You could have easily found all this out by yourself by a) using the Online Help feature and b) conducting a few experiments with an uncleaned file to see for yourself what the options do. Also, Mustafa is right. You need to turn off "Document Protection" for direct editing in TagEditor to work, though. HTH, Benjamin

Regarding looking it up on the Trados website and performing a few experiments... This may be so, but why do I ask questions here, because I can have the answer quicker... Why do I ask proz.com questions, because I don't want to google all day, but have the opinion of others...

Imagine that after performing the translation you do a spelling check (obviously, you do not use Trados for that) or some editing because a word is well spelled but it is the wrong one (e.g. "tee" instead of "tea"). Don't update: The correction is not included in the TM - thus, the TM will still include the spelling errors and wrong words ("tee"). TM and document are therefore not aligned with each other. This is bad if you want to reuse that TM on a future occasion. Update: The new text is included in the TM. So you actually correct spelling errors and wrong terminology in the TM. Here you state that the document is correct and the TM has to be updated accordingly. Update document: Your typos and corrections come back, because you have stated that the "correct" translation is in the TM. There are of course situations for all three options. I, personally, due to my way of working, have "Update" by default. But there are cases where the other options are more adequate. ▲ Collapse

Martin Wenzel wrote: This may be so, but why do I ask questions here, because I can have the answer quicker... Because you might have learned something there, e.g. how to get this kind of answers when your Internet connection is down. I guess it's like back in school where you could either do your homework or just copy it from a friend. Think about it - the best understanding can be gained from direct learning experience, not from somebody providing the answers for you. Anyway, it's just a thought and I'm glad I could help you. B
