I just proofread a ttx file for a powerpoint presentation. Now that I am trying to clean it up by 'save target as', it will not work. Instead I get an error message that says

Connection with server application error:
Unable to locate the original file:....
Please copy this original file into the directory above and try again.

I have ensured that the file is where it is supposed to be, so I cannot see what the problem is. I have searched this topic on Proz, and the suggestion was to try to save it to target with Powerpoint running in the background. Unfortunately that does not work either, so I am getting a little desperate.....

Would appreciate any advice you have, thanks.

Do you really need to save the target? Sep 9, 2007

Hi Brigitte,

I just proofread a ttx file for a powerpoint presentation. Now that I am trying to clean it up by 'save target as', it will not work.

Do you really need to create the target PPT file?
If yes, did you create the TTX?

I have ensured that the file is where it is supposed to be, so I cannot see what the problem is.

Did you check the source file path in the TTX file header?
If someone else created the TTX (and sent it to you for proofreading), chances are the source path is different from yours. To check the source file path settings, open the TTX file in a text editor and search for "SourceDocumentPath".

Remember that by changing this setting, you might solve your problem, but might create one for the recipient (still assuming that you didn't create the TTX). No rocket science - just remember to tell them you had to change the source file path in order to see the target file.

HTH, Ralf

Hello Ralf,

thanks so much for answering, to your questions:

Yes, I need to create the ppt file as I have to check formatting (plus I am supposed to supply a clean file as well).
No, I did not create the ttx file, as it was sent to me by the translator.

I did check the path and managed to start the process, but then got a message telling me that "The outline is too long to read in its entirety". When I clicked on okay, another one came up, saying "Object reference not set to an instance of an object". Huh? When I clicked okay on this one, the whole process stopped again.

Already happened to me Sep 10, 2007

Hi Brigitte

This has already happened to me and I discovered that I can't created the target file, unless I created the ttx. That is, if you have a ppt and open it in TagEditor thus creating the ttx, then you would be able to have the final cleaned file in ppt.

Otherwise, it's not possible. I tried millions of times and it only works when I create the ttx directly from the source file.

Most likely unrelated Sep 10, 2007

Hi again,

No, I did not create the ttx file, as it was sent to me by the translator.

Does the translator use the same Trados version?
Check the CreationToolVersion in the header.

Best regards,
Ralf

It is possible Sep 10, 2007

I'm in the process of editing a series of PPT files, where the TTX files were created by someone else. Provided I don't forget to edit the source path, there's no problem whatsoever (mind you, we're both working on build 756/759).

Best regards,
Ralf

Thank you Sep 10, 2007

Hello Ralf and Elisabete,

thank you both for your comments.

Unfortunately, just changing the source file path did not work either, so I would have to conclude that it was some kind of incompatibility with my system. That may be related to Ralf's comment about working on different versions (would a different version of powerpoint make a difference as well?), and would explain why I did not have any previous problems in this area because I always work with my 'own' files. Live and learn, I guess!

I will definitely make a point of this for the future. Thanks again, this was very helpful.
