Before getting into the problem and further details, let me describe my basic setup:

OS: Windows Vista
MS Office XP
Trados 7
Multiterm 7.1
Machine: One hell of a fast one, even with Vista and Adobe bloatware on it (I run Linux on my other computers).

The problem: MultiTerm and TWB work fine independently, but MultiTerm is not working with either TWB or Word XP.

In TWB, when trying to add a termbase to the Term Recognition options, I can get to the actual termbases and select them, but as soon as I get back to the Term Recognition Options window I get the message "(-2147467261): (null)," and the termbase simply won't be added.

In Word XP (I just tried this to see if it was MultiTerm that was causing this issue, and I believe it is, although I'm not sure), I get a runtime error when looking for a term in the MultiTerm bar: " '-2147024894 (80070002)' File or assembly name Trados.MultiTerm.MultiSearch, or one of its dependencies, was not found"

I originally thought that the problem might be with the termbase that I was trying to add, but not even the Local Sample termbase works, and the termbase I was originally trying to add works perfectly fine in MultiTerm by itself.

I have seen the two related forum posts and the suggestions there didn't work out (registering Trados
and reinstalling with User Account Control turned off), so I was wondering if anyone else has run into this problem and found a workaround.

I would also appreciate it if we avoid the following answers:

1) "Trados 7 is incompatible with Windows Vista." Except for MultiTerm interaction issues, Trados 7 has been running like a charm on this machine. There's a difference between "incompatible" and "the company does not offer support for the OS with that version."

2) "It's all Microsoft's fault." For a program as expensive as Trados, which is much lower-tech than, say, Adobe Photoshop Extended CS3 or Autodesk Maya Complete, I would be a little more hesitant to release the Trados people from their shoddy software engineering issues. Furthermore, it's unbelievable that there is no support/updates for Vista, given the fact that Trados 7 is such recent software. I'm about the last person to defend Microsoft from anyone who accuses them of shoddy software design as well, but I'd like to see how many of my friends in the software programming sector would be able to tell me that Trados is a great program and that it's all Microsoft's fault with a straight face. (And let's not even get into the SDL Trados 2007 nightmare that most people seem to have run into.)

Now, discussing about Microsoft vs Trados and about functionality liabilities has its place and all...it's just that I'm looking for a workaround for this problem and not for the answers that seem to be given by default any time one of these issues comes up in the forums.

(and yes, I know this might have to do with Vista not granting the necessary access privileges to MultiTerm, but I still need the workaround then!)

anyone who might run into this problem too. I just found the forum thread that deals with this issue:
