...this is my error message.

I have no clue how to find the matching start tag or even which start tag is missing.

Can anybody out there help me? I would like to clean up my file (which I need to send tonight to my client), and I just don't know what to do.

I know, the night is still young. But I also do have a full time job and have to get to work tomorrow morning. So I'm not really keen on sitting here all night and searching for start tags.....

Your support is very much appreciated.

Thanks again in advance!!

Stefanie

Please do yourself a favour and give us the possibility to help you Nov 14, 2007

What kind of file are you working with? Did you run the SDL Generic Tag Verifier?
Did you by any chance modify your source file after you've created the ttx?
As you see there are a lot of questions...
Now I only can guess you've added or removed a tag by accident.

So please provide us with the knowledge you have.
Thanks

Jerzy

...for not having provided any details.
I'm working on a WORD document.
Yes, I ran the SDL Generic Tag Verifier. During this the process the error message came up.
No, I haven't modified the source file after having created the ttx-file.

I hope that information is of more use.

I have to admit that I'm not very experienced with TRADOS.

Thanks.

Double click the line with the error message Nov 14, 2007

Tageditor will bring you then to the place in your document, where the error appears. It also should mark the superfluous or missing Tag. Open the corresponding segment and correct the Tag.
This would be the easiest option to do. Maybe this will indeed help you.
If not - you can send me the file and let me check. My email is info at doku minus trans dot de.

Thanks very much for your nice offer.

I have run the verifier again. it shows only spacing differences, no missing tags......

No error message in Tag verifier and an error message, when you attempt to save as target? Nov 14, 2007

This is indeed very strange.
Could you please check your original Word file for any page breaks, column breaks and section breaks, not preceeded by a paragraph mark?
I must admit I'm puzzled now.
So it would be not a very bad idea to send me both Word and ttx file - having them here would give me the possibility to analyse the problem better.
You can rest assured I treat such situations very seriuos and - if necessary - would even sign a NDA with you.

error while writing breaks Nov 14, 2007

I have now taken the original document and translated again. Since I have the TM filled with everything I thought this might be a good idea.

Not so good....now I geht the following error message when trying to clean up the file:
"error while writing breaks"

I guess I'm getting a pain in the butt.....

No, you aren't - and now we are at home Nov 14, 2007

You have several possibillities:

  • Take the original Word file, replace all breaks (page breaks, section breaks) by themselves, preceeded by a paragraph mark. To do so, put "^m" (without quotation marks) in the field "Search for", and "^p^m" in the field replace with. Replace all. Then do the same with "^b" and "^p^b". Save the file.
  • Recreate ttx, translate again.
  • Save as target, the error should not appear again.
  • Open doc again in Word, now replace all "^p^b" with "^b" and all "^p^m" with "^m". Your file will look exactly as previously. This is the long run.

For a shorter run:

  • Open doc file in Word and ttx in Tageditor.
  • In Word search for "^b". When found, check if it is preceeded by a paragraph mark. If not, enter a paragraph mark there.
  • Now go to ttx, look for exactly the same location.
  • Copy the closing paragraüh tag behind the section break and place a copy of it before the section breaktag. Now copy the starting paragraph tag before the section break and place the copy of it behind the section break tag.
  • Repeat this for all section breaks with missing paragraph mark before.
  • Repeat the same procedure with all page breaks without preceeding paragraph mark.
  • Save as target should then work.

However, if you have Context TM, the retranslate process will be possibly faster than the second one with replacing tags.

Thanks so much.... Nov 14, 2007

....for your help.

When trying to search for the ^b WORD does say there is not such a thing (I use the German version).

This sounds all very complicated and it's getting late. I have to finish 28 pages. I guess I will copy and paste everything.

I know this will take a while and is probably not the most elegant solution. But I'm sure it'll work.....

Maybe I can try your solution on the weekend, when I have time to familiarize myself with TRADOS.

I'm just tired and frustrated right now.

Stefanie

Here is what I found in SDL Support database Nov 14, 2007

Open your Word document in Word. Make all hidden characters visible so that you can see the section breaks and paragraph marks in the document.
Search for section breaks in the document: Select Edit/Replace, click on the More button, place the cursor in the 'Find what' box, and type '^b' (without the quotes).
Place the cursor in the 'Replace with' box, click Special and select 'Find What Text'; position the cursor in front of the '^&' (without the quotes) that gets inserted, and type in '^p' (without the quotes) so that the 'Replace with' box looks like this:

^p^&
Click Replace All, click OK, click Close, then save and close the file.
When the file is processed in TagEditor or TeamWorks, there will then be no problem saving the target file.

BTW I'm still here (for the next hour or so), so if you wish, your document should be ready within minutes - I have enough experience with this error to get it fixed quite fast.

Your offer... Nov 14, 2007

is very generous.

If it's really not taking too long to get this fixed I will email the data.

But I don't want you to put too much time into this.

I will prepare the documents and send you an email.

I really don't know how to return this favour....

No problem at all Nov 14, 2007

Please don't forget to send me both the translated ttx and the original Word file, as otherwise I will not be able to restore it.

As you know, one can learn best with his own faults and mistakes, but it does hurt a lot. Learning with the mistakes of other may not be that educative, but does not hurt that much - no one can know when such situation can happen himself, so it is good to be prepared

Trados Tags Nov 16, 2007

This is one of the reason that I think SDLX is easier to use than Trados. It's every easy to get messed up with Trados tags, be it in Word or in TagEditor. Need special care when translating/editing/proofreading in Trados.
