I am using:
Windows XP Home edition
Trados 2007 – TagEditor
I have received from my client a .txt.ttx file generated from a PageMaker file, using Story Collector, I suppose.
The file was in Italian and I translated it in Romanian, using TagEditor. I cleaned up the file and got one .txt file to be re-imported in PageMaker (this is supposed to be done by client himself). I opened the target .txt file, to check the result and saw that all Romanian characters are not showing properly (I get all the codes: eg. #254 instead of the Romanian character „ţ”).
I assume it was an encoding problem: I went back to the original .txt.ttx file and opened it in Notepad, to see the encoding: it was Windows 1252. I changed it manually to UTF-8, then re-opened the file in TagEditor, translated it to Fuzzy and saved it as target. I got a new .txt target file and checked it again by opening it in Notepad. The problem is still there: Romanian characters are not showing properly. The only difference is that codes for characters are different from above (eg. #197 #163 instead of the Romanian character „ţ”).
I don’t know if my client will be able to import the file and have all Romanian characters shown properly in his target PageMaker file.
Any help would be really appreciated.
Thank you very much, Monica.

Leave txt as it is! Jan 14, 2008

Do NOT change anything in the txt file!
You are working for Pagemaker, a matusalem under DTP applications, which cannot read Unicode.
Leave the txt as it comes from Tageditor and let the Pagemaker SDL Trados plug-in and the DTP specialist do the rest of the job. The DTP specialist will need to use a font able to display special Romanian characters, but this is his job, not yours.

Regards
Jerzy

Thank you Jerzy,
In fact this is what I have done.
All my tests were done on copies of the file and memory.

I feel released now and I hope that my client knows what to do.
Thank you again for your time, you have always been a real help for me.

Happy New Year!
La mulţi Ani!

Monica

Should your customer ask... Jan 14, 2008

that Pagemaker is not showing proper characters, tell him simply to use a font supporting the proper code page for Romanian.
If they don't have any proper font for that, the www.fonts.com homepage would be, where I would have directed them to.

Best regards
Jerzy
