I'm trying to clean a Word-file (2003) in Trados 7.0. It cleans 3 words and then a message pops up saying "Can't process rtf-format" in the bottom of the cleaning window. The file is saved in word-format som I don't understand why I can't clean the file.

Can somebody help me?

Copy the text into another document Feb 14, 2008

Have you tried to copy the text into an empty word document, and save it as a new file?
And then try to clean the new file...

Good luck!

Quick fix but not a long-term solution Feb 14, 2008

Make sure all hidden text is showing.
Find and Replace Hidden text with nothing.
You end up with a clean file.

Forced clean-up Feb 14, 2008

Select "developer tools" (in Word 2007) from the menu at the top.

Then select "Macros" and "tw4winClean.Main

Thanks Feb 15, 2008

Thanks a lot!

I was too quick to send my question, I see now that there's quite a lot of information about this problem here in the forum.

Excellent solution. Note however that the file to be cleaned must be open before running the macro. Aug 25, 2008

Yes, but be careful Aug 25, 2008

Yes, it works , but be sure to save a copy before, because otherwise you will loose the bilingual file. Also, this method, though cleans up files even with corrupted tags Trados itself wouldn't clean, does not update the TM.

PS. Just Tools-Macro-Macros... in Word 2003

Please try the Following... Aug 26, 2008

Hello Heidi,

The error you are receiving is typically caused by specific problems in the document, such as unresolved tracked changes. These problems can be addressed by following these steps:

1. Open the .doc file in Microsoft Word and save it as an RTF file (choose Rich Text Format from the Save As Type list in the Save As dialog box).

2. Re-open the RTF file. Find the Accept changes drop-down button on Word's Reviewing toolbar and choose Accept all changes.

3. Sometimes it is necessary to accept changes individually. It is especially helpful when changes are located in the header or footer of the document. Position your cursor at the top of the file and click on Next and Accept Change buttons until no more changes are found.

4. If necessary, disable the Track Changes function in Word's Tools menu.

5. Keep the file as RTF and process it through Clean-Up in Translator's Workbench, or save the file back as a .doc file.

The file should now go through batch processes with no errors.

I hope this helps.

Many Thanks,

Gareth Powell
