Hans Sussenburger has released an updated version of the Frankenstein Translation Memory Tool. Frankenstein is shareware; a licence costs $100. Being a Java application, it runs on both Windows and Linux. Brief details:



1. Frankenstein is 100% Java

2. It reads and writes Trados (tm) .txt files

3. It works with both file and database tms.

5. Frankenstein can be used from within Microsoft Word (tm) or Microsoft Excel (tm) without any third-party code or license.

6. You can automate MS Word, MS Excel, and MS Powerpoint, i.e. read and write files of these applications if you use the Java bridge from http://www.alphaworks.ibm.com/tech/bridge2java. Note that this component is not included in the download of Frankenstein. Get it from the above URL and make sure you comply with the license agreement.

Try the 1.5 Beta version with integrated Web Access via a web browser for adding and viewing TM entries (no setup required). You can also treat any other machine running Frankenstein as you would treat a regular TM -- this feature is called HTTP TM.
