Good Email Notifier

I have always used eprompter as email notifier (software that checks all your email accounts every minute and rings a bell when you get a new post). I can't however get it to work with Vista despite consulting the developer and user forum. The software says that I am not connected to the internet when I am!

2 questions:
1) Can someone recommend another email notifier that works on Vista

2) Is there any email notifier that works well on a mobile phone. This may be a cheaper option than a Blackberry.

Thanks for help

Thunderbird Apr 23, 2008

Thunderbird displays a mail symbol and can be set to give a sound signal as well. I have mine set to check once a minute. I have no experience of Vista but I have not seen any reports of Vista having problems with Thunderbird. I don't know how it works with mobiles, I've never tried, but there probably is some such option.

Thunderbird not as good as eprompter Apr 23, 2008

Thunderbird works on Vista but only seems to check one account at a time (I have to press the check mail button one time for each account). Also it can't access some of my mail accounts for some reason including BT.

I also use Thunderbird and the New Email window works fine with Vista.

About an email notifier for a Mobile Phone, Windows Mobile phones can automatically check the server for new messages. The time interval is user-defined and you can also choose what to download, the header, the entire message, first 500 bytes, first 1000 bytes, etc. I strongly suggest you consider getting a Wi-Fi-capable phone, you would save a lot of money since Wi-Fi is pretty much everywhere. Today I actually checked my emails while I was stuck at a red light without having to use my data minutes.

Windows Live mail Apr 23, 2008

Hi,

If you don't mind using yet another Microsoft product, this one can be downloaded for free. Once installed, you can set up as many accounts as you want and set, just like in Outlook, when you want the program to check the various accounts. It is all automatic and works fine with Vista.

Gmail Notifier Apr 23, 2008

This small application works wonders. It automatically checks the 3 email accounts I've added to my Google account every 5 minutes and displays a message and an icon in the Windows status bar. It is supposed to support Vista but I haven't checked. Also exists for mobile phones.

I use thunderbird too with Vista but I am unable to get it to make a loud noise when I get an email message and automatically check my 3 main email accounts every minute like eprompter does with XP. Am I doing something wrong?

In fact at the moment I have my blackberry on at great expense (as I am not in France) to ring every time I get an email.

(For the second question there are not enough WiFi spots here so a mobile solution must pass through the mobile phone network)

I will try Windows Live Mail then: Thanks for the suggestion

Windows Mobile alert Apr 23, 2008

As Claudia mentions, Windows mobile works wonderfully. I have 4 email accounts, on different servers. My Blackjack phone is programmed to poll each one frequently. In addition, I assigned a chime sound so that I can tell the difference between a call and an email message that arrived; that way I know whether to pick the phone or let it be if I am busy or in a meeting.

One word of caution: if you have Outlook, it must be off in your computer for this to work properly. If Outlook is up and running, the messages go straight to your computer, skipping your phone. No problem with Internet based email like Yahoo, Gmail, etc., your browser may be up and running and you will still get the messages delivered to your phone.

pop peeper Apr 23, 2008

http://www.poppeeper.com/

Great little program. Works on Vista. Has a portable version and many plugins to add functionality to it.
I recommend that.
Thunderbird is also good, but it is a full mail client (not a suppose to be problem with the use as notifier) and it uses quite a lot of memory, which might be a problem on some systems.

For mobile phones. Apr 23, 2008

You can use xpress mail, you can get pop3 mail and web mail accounts such as yahoo or hotmail, and can be programmed to check mail every 5 minutes.

PopTray Apr 23, 2008

http://www.poptray.org/

The features are great, but there is one disadvantage: you cannot view Unicode (or any other MIME encoded) headers. Whether it's big or small depends on how much Unicode mail you get...

The Bat! Apr 23, 2008

Not sure if you're asking for this (I presume e-mail notifier differs from e-mail client), but I'd recommend trying The Bat! (http://www.ritlabs.com/), which I've been using for several years and been absolutely delighted with it's functions, be it notifications, filtering or other specs.

Try PopTray... dunno if it works on Vista, though, but its development is active.
