Mozilla Firefox won't open ... am I alone?

Hi all,

I wonder if anyone else has been having problems opening Mozilla Firefox over the past few days?

A few days ago it happened to me -- after downloading the latest version ... but after a series of actions, and truthfully, I was completely clueless as to what I was doing, and then rebooting the computer, it opened and worked fine for the past 2 days but then this afternoon the same thing happened after my computer (hp laptop) had been in hibernation for about 2 hours.

I can't open the browser -- I double click and nothing happens. By the way, I'm in Spain -- in case others here have had the same problem?

Thanks in advance for all relevant input!

I hate using IE --

has anyone used Opera lately? Or is there something equivalent to Firefox?

Opera and Firefox Dec 10, 2009

Hi,

I use Opera and Firefox. I keep both open all day: firefox for my personal web-based e-mail and Opera for my professional web-based e-mail.
For surfing I tend to use Firefox more, mostly out of habit, but Opera is good too. Besides, it doesn't cost anything, so why not give it a go

You're not alone. I've had this problem for ages now (running Windows XP with 1 GB of RAM), and actually switched to Chrome because of slow startup (it usually takes 7 minutes to start Firefox on my PC—I kid you not). But Chrome is quite unstable when opening Flash content so I still keep Firefox around.

Have you tried:

(1) Opening Task manager and assigning high priority to firefox.exe (usually works for me) or even realtime priority (briefly of course, unless you want everything else to crash);
(2) Opening Task manager and making sure firefox.exe is not already running in the background for some reason;
(3) Downloading the latest beta version?

Chrome + Safe mode Dec 11, 2009

Also: try starting Firefox in safe mode (Start > All Programs > Mozilla Firefox). If everything works out, then you have a problem with one of your plugins or extensions.

If you'd like to try something different (not equivalent to Firefox, give Google Chrome a try. Despite its faults, I can't recommend it enough for general surfing. It is blindingly fast, opens in seconds, uses up little system memory and, perhaps best of all, separates each tab/plugin into a different thread ("process isolation"), so if something hangs or crashes you can start a nifty internal Task manager and close it without losing the rest of your work.

I had similar problems with Firefox some time ago Dec 11, 2009

usually it meant that the application was already active in a system and I had to end the process before being able to start it again. In order to do that you use Ctr Alt Del, > Task Manager > Processes > Firefox.exe > End Process

It always worked for me

Best Regards
Stanislaw

Thank you everyone for your replies! Dec 11, 2009

fvasconcellos: I've now downloaded Chrome, so have that as my backup and may eventually switch over, thank you!

Stanislaw Czech and fvasconcellos:
I followed your instructions and was finally able to open Mozilla Firefox ... but I suppose it's also now clear that I need to get someone to take a look at my computer, since these kinds of disruptions are frustrating, to say the least, and may be due to some configuration that I don't want ...

Again, thanks so much to all who responded -- it is a great help to get feedback from the community ... and know that I'm not alone!

Similar problem also in Spain Dec 11, 2009

Firefox became apparently unopenable on my computer on Weds 9th here in Spain too. On the advice of a colleague I just downloaded it again, rather than searching for its continued presence on my computer. The download was less than a couple of minutes and now we're back to business as normal. Don't ask me for any explanations...!

Same problem here too Dec 11, 2009

I faced exactly the same problem, in India. It started a few weeks ago. Firefox just wouldn't load up. Finally I had to uninstall Firefox and go back to IE.

Even when Firefox was working fine, there was this problem that if you shut it down and try to reload it, you are told that Firefox is already running and cannot reload. You then had to use the Task Manager to kill the Firefox application and then start it again.

and even more thanks Dec 11, 2009

to Noni and Balasubramaniam -- that is exactly the problem -- I could be running it & everything was fine, but then if I shut it down (& put my computer into hibernate mode) and tried opening it, it wouldn't respond at all.

As I said above, I followed the directions (I had to end the .exe task via the task manager) and then it opened without any problem.

I think I'll also take Noni's advice & download the whole thing again. I'm not savvy enough about all of this to be searching around the innards of the computer -- I simply get lost and frustrated.

One more question -- if/when I download Mozilla again, do I have to go and delete the old version? Or will the new version simply override it?

I think you ought to post... Dec 11, 2009

... in the Firefox forum rather than here.
I don't know the Spanish version (I use the Italian version) address, but you should be able to find easy enough with Google (and IE...).

thanks Andrea -- Dec 11, 2009

I just opened the Firefox forum link you gave and it looks like others have had the same problem recently -- with saved bookmarks and favorites disappearing as well --

Nonetheless, I did post here -- and got my answers, which were much easier to understand & follow than what I'd seen in the Firefox forum --

thanks for the link and thanks for responding --
