Hi everyone,
I'm planning to upgrade from Studio 2009 to 2011, even though none of my clients has expressed that an upgrade is necessary. I went to the SDL website and it only seems possible to upgrade to 2014 at this point. I've sent SDL an email to see if I can still buy a 2011 licence, but in the meantime I thought I'd see what other info is out there. Do you know of a way to buy 2011 if I so choose, or are the advantages of 2014 so much that it's not worth it buying an earlier version. Your thoughts?

At some point you want to update again Dec 9, 2013

Even if you now only update to 2011, at some point you will want to update to 2014 but then the most recent version might be 2016, so you will always stay behind.
I updated today from 2011 to 2014 and cannot see much change. People say 2014 is much faster. I cannot decide on that, because I updated from HDD to SSD at the same time, so everything is much faster now.
The update fee we pay to software providers enables them to keep abreast on technology and provide support to users. If we all would cease to update after a year or two nobody would be left to provide software for us.

You probably missed the boat Dec 9, 2013

SDL will give you a definite answer, but you probably missed the boat: you could have upgraded from 2009 to 2011 in the few weeks/months before 2014 was officially released, and have been eligible to a free upgrade to 2014. If you had done that, you could have installed 2011 on a computer, and then added 2014 when it was released, keeping 2011. You would not have been able to install both 2011 and 2014 on a new computer, since 2014 was an upgrade to 2011 (ie. meant to replace it).

Why you should upgrade to Studio 2014 Dec 10, 2013

Studio 2014 has several nice features that weren't available in Studio 2011 (let alone Studio 2009).
I wrote about some of them here:
http://signsandsymptomsoftranslation.com/2013/10/09/studio-2014-part-2/

Although SDL still supports 2011, I think it's reasonable that it only sells 2014 now.

If you're thinking of upgrading from Studio 2009, 2014 is the way to go!

Thanks for replying Dec 10, 2013

Thanks for replying. I still have some clients that insist on 2007, and I've been having incompatibility issues between Trados users of different years (2011 users often can't open files when generated by 2014, which has been addressed here in ProZ without much satisfaction, as far as I saw).
And by the way SDL did reply and I can only purchase the latest upgrade.
Thanks again for your input!
