Used to be, but latest ones are different May 14, 2005

Until about four years ago, UK car registrations ended (up to about 1982) or began (after that) with a letter specific to the year of manufacture, but not the calendar year - the year ran from 1st August to end July. Then they introduced another system with a pair of numbers in the middle, so far all beginning with 0 or 5, to indicate the half-year, and other letters indicating the area.
