The Directorate General Secretariat and Language Services of the European Central Bank (ECB) is currently seeking applications from students/graduates who wish to acquire work experience in a professional translation environment by working as a trainee for a period of up to three months in the Translation Division. The Translation Division is a central service unit which provides linguistic expertise and support in the official Community languages to the ECB.


The vacancy is for a trainee translator of Danish, Dutch, Finnish, French, German, Greek, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish or Swedish mother tongue, who will be assigned to a translation unit comprising translators of the same mother tongue. Under the supervision of one of the current translators, the selected candidates will be expected to:

a.. translate texts principally from English into Danish, Dutch, Finnish, French, German, Greek, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish or Swedish,

b.. revise texts in Danish, Dutch, Finnish, French, German, Greek, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish or Swedish and

c.. proof-read Danish, Dutch, Finnish, French, German, Greek, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish or Swedish texts destined for publication.

They will also be expected to identify, extract and compile terminology - in particular in the financial and economic fields - and to align relevant previously translated texts, thereby expanding the Division\'s existing Danish, Dutch, Finnish, French, German, Greek, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish or Swedish translation memories. Their work will be revised by experienced staff.


a.. A perfect command of Danish, Dutch, Finnish, French, German, Greek, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish or Swedish, excellent English and a very good knowledge of at least one other official Community language.

b.. University degree (Honours level or equivalent) in translation or modern languages. Applications are also encouraged from students currently embarking upon their final year.

c.. An interest in financial and economic affairs.

d.. Strong interpersonal and communication skills; the ability to learn quickly; self-motivation and the ability to work as part of a team in a multicultural environment are very important.

e.. PC skills and a practical knowledge of standard MS Office applications. Familiarity with a terminology management package such as TRADOS MultiTerm, translation memory software such as TRADOS Translator\'s Workbench and a text alignment tool such as TRADOS WinAlign would be an advantage.

Terms and conditions

The successful candidates will be granted a monthly traineeship allowance.

The ECB will also provide trainees residing outside the Rhine-Main area with temporary accommodation for the duration of their participation in the traineeship programme.

Travel expenses incurred at the beginning and end of the traineeship period will also be reimbursed.

Candidates must be nationals of a Member State of the European Union and must have medical cover for the period of the traineeship.
